How does the catalogue work?

How does the catalogue work?

Catawiki is the online catalogue of collectables. The catalogue is filled by users in the same way as Wikipedia. You can keep track of your collection and wish list for free. Catawiki also provides a capability to buy and sell your collectables, using the central catalogue as the basis.

How are areas put together?

You can search through the catalogue using the search bar or the area structure on the homepage. The area structure has three layers. There are the main areas such as comic strips, stamps and model cars. Beneath that are fields such as Author, Publisher and Artist, which categorise the subjects that collectors use for their collections. The final level contains the actual items. Examples are The Beatles, Vandersteen etc.

How should I interpret the prices in the catalogue?

The prices indicate the price at which the item in its current state could be bought or sold. This is about prices for which actual transactions have taken place, i.e. not about catalogue prices for which you receive a small fee when selling. These prices may be linked to the condition of the items. You should therefore pay close attention to the description of the condition.

How are the prices are defined?

Prices are defined by the moderators on the basis of their extensive practical experience. However, everybody can make price suggestions, for example because of personal selling or buying experience. If an item doesn't have a price yet, your price suggestion will immediately be applied and later reviewed by the moderators. If a price was already applied beforehand, your suggestion will be passed to the moderators.

Do I really receive those prices if I sell my items?

Although the catalogue prices are up to date, there is always supply and demand for specific sales. This means it depends on where and how you offer your items. To obtain the catalogue prices, some patience may be needed. If you want to sell your items right away, you might have to accept a lower price. On the other hand, if you offer an item in a situation where people are trying to outbid each other, prices can even get higher than the catalogue price. Moderators like to hear your price suggestions on the basis of your selling and buying experiences.

Why is adding an image mandatory?

On the one hand, this is to make the website visually more attractive and more user-friendly. On the other hand, we like to make sure the item really does exist. We can verify this through the image.

To top

What are the rules for the images?

Images should be in one of the following formats: .jpg, .gif, .png or .tiff. Pictures that exceed 700 pixels in height or width will be resized automatically. The largest file size that can be uploaded is 5MB. We recommend using .jpg files as they are compact and therefore load much faster. However, if an item does not have an image yet, we prefer that you add a small image rather than no image at all.
