Adrie de Koster

Adrie de Koster

Auctioneer Militaria & Antique Weaponry

These objects tell stories about the war that not everyone knows.

  • Avid militaria collector
  • Worked for more than 7 years as dealer
  • Large network

Exceptional lots

Adrie de Koster

It was a letter from his grandfather, written to his wife during the First World War, that really touched Adrie de Koster. This military mail from a trench in the middle of a battlefield provided a unique perspective of the war. So Adrie started collecting military letters. Then came photographs, medals and, ultimately, all kinds of militaria, especially from the First World War. Adrie established a lot of contacts at fairs and also started to concentrate on trading so he could finance the pieces that he wanted for his own collection.

As a result Adrie can flawlessly determine where militaria comes from and its value. When in doubt about pieces, he can rely on his large network and a collection of very thick reference books. In the relatively small militaria world, Adrie has built strong relationships with suppliers. He knows that helmets are especially popular amongst collectors, so he likes to include them in his auctions, which serve die-hard collectors and amateur enthusiasts.

Alain Dilmen

Alain Dilmen

Auctioneer Militaria & Antique Weaponry

Alain Dilmen

I knew very early on that there was a trade in antique weapons.

  • Extensive trade experience
  • A collector of antique weapons himself
  • Diploma in weapons and ammunition

Exceptional lots

Alain Dilmen enjoyed going to the firing range. He was particularly interested in the precision and technique of the weapons. He read a lot about it, and Alain knew very early on that there was a trade in antique weapons. In fact he set up his own flourishing trade in antique weapons and militaria before the age of 20. He acquired extensive knowledge about the market and a large network through this. Both come into play at Catawiki.

Together with his colleagues, Alain puts together a new militaria auction every week, where he mainly deals with antique weapons. It’s not always easy, given the ever-changing regulatory requirements imposed on antique weapons. If all the paperwork is in order, Alain knows precisely what to look at to determine the value. If something comes up that he is not sure about, he consults his extensive network. He would personally like to come across a well-maintained 19th-century Colt revolver, which we all recognise from the old spaghetti westerns. He also thinks that a beautiful blunderbuss would be of interest to many collectors at the auction.

Albert uses his artistic eye to monitor the quality of the art auctions, although always in consultation with fellow auctioneers and by maintaining relationships with suppliers and buyers. With a focus on international expansion, Albert expects to offer Catawiki visitors even more exclusive works.

  • Knows all facets of men's fashion
  • Worked for various large fashion companies

Exceptional lots

Alexander Hekkink

Alexander Hekkink knows all facets of men's fashion. From neat and formal suits, to trendy and casual designer outfits. Through his jobs at LACOSTE, Societyshop and Geox, he has encountered it all. This is no coincidence however seeing as for as long as he can remember, Alexander Hekkink has harboured a special interest in fashion. He likes to dress well and is especially fascinated by the versatility of men's fashion. Details, colours and contrasts are crucial for the way you express yourself. The possibilities are endless. With this thought in mind, Alexander Hekkink composes his auctions. He enjoys offering a large diversity of brands and garments that anyone can relate to. He also hopes to serve the international market this way and to introduce it to fashion from Europe or the rest of the world. The beauty of Catawiki, Alexander Hekkink says, is that he can draw attention to fashion in a much broader sense, where a beautiful Corneliani coat and a trendy Dsquared2 outfit can be displayed side by side.

Most militaria objects are pieces with a rich history.

  • More than 10 years' experience in trade
  • Vast network
  • Avid collector and fair visitor

Exceptional lots

Alexander Fedotov

Alexander Fedotov grew up with militaria, which is not surprising when you grow up in Volgograd, the former Stalingrad. The entire city is characterised by the large battle that was fought here during the Second World War and the courageous soldiers that effectuated a turning point in the war. When Alexander Fedotov found a German helmet and took it home, he was hooked on collecting militaria. His collection soon expanded at a phenomenal rate and he acquired connections throughout Russia. Trade soon came into play, which enabled him to turn his hobby into his profession. Due to the thousands of pieces that Alexander Fedotov has come into contact with, he can safely call himself a genuine militaria expert. This experience is very much needed when assessing a vast supply of militaria. He not only uses his own knowledge, but also consults his network for the necessary, specialist advice. Alexander Fedotov likes to create varied auctions with not only weapons and helmets, but also with documents, uniforms and distinctions. The unique story behind each of these objects decides their value to a great extent and makes them even more interesting to collectors.

Auctioneer Asian Art & Objects / Ethnographic & Tribal Art

Amy Wassing

Working with Asian art and objects, especially from Indonesia, feels like coming home.

  • Nearly 20 years' experience
  • Expert in Indonesian and Oceanian art
  • Worked in various museums
  • Has her own consulting firm for collection management

Exceptional lots

Amy Wassing literally feels at home among Asian art and objects. Art and objects from Indonesia in particular spark her interest. Her father was the Oceanian curator at the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam and her mother was director of the Indonesia Museum Nusantara in Delft, so she spent a big part of her childhood in museum depots and at art fairs. For this reason, Amy Wassing chose to study Arts and Cultures of Southeast Asia and Oceania at the University of Leiden. From then on, she has followed in the footsteps of her parents, as deputy head of collections at the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam and curator of the Indonesia Museum Nusantara in Delft. In the past few years she has owned her own consulting firm in collection management.

Catawiki is a perfect match for Amy Wassing who can deploy all her expertise in the field of Indonesia and Oceania in the Asian Art and Objects auctions. Her experience in various museums is very similar to her work as an auctioneer. For instance, establishing an interesting exhibition can be comparable to composing an exciting auction. The many hours Amy Wassing has spent in museum depots gave her an enormous database of knowledge, which allows her to often recognise the offered lots at a glance. Nevertheless, she also encounters lots that she doesn't know and this makes her work exciting and surprising, each and every day.

Anita Helmy

Auctioneer Art (modern)

Art shows you another world, which continues to surprise.

  • Educated at the Art Academy
  • Owned her own art gallery
  • More than 30 years’ experience
  • Is an artist herself

Exceptional lots

Anita Helmy

Modern art is the common theme running through Anita Helmy’s life. At the age of 12, a Dalí exhibition made a deep impression on her, after which she went to the Saturday academy for art education. Art Academy followed, but Anita went her own way during the financial crisis in the early 80s. Along with a few fellow artists, she opened a gallery with exhibitions at home and abroad. They wanted to use this as a springboard to bring art back into the spotlight. Since then she has continued to view and create art.

With so much knowledge of art, it has become an almost tangible part of Anita. In assessing lots for the Catawiki art auction, she sometimes goes by her gut instinct. Because while a big name like Escher is always nice, the work of an unknown artist can also be interesting. Anita also maintains good relationships with her suppliers. She provides varied auctions every week, with lots that excite both collectors and enthusiasts.

Auctioneer Art (modern)

By the age of 11 I was already fascinated by modern art.

  • Over 10 years' experience in art trade
  • Started his own gallery
  • Vast network of artists and art lovers
  • Huge fan of modern art

Exceptional lots

Anthony Chrisp

A trip to London at the age of 11 was a revelation for Anthony Chrisp. While visiting a gallery, he realised that art didn’t always have to hang in a stuffy museum; it is a living thing that is created by talented and passionate people. From that point on he was hooked on modern art. He never had much success when it came to creating art himself, so he chose to study design. This allowed him to design products that were undeniably influenced by modern art. After his studies, Anthony went to work in a gallery and started his own gallery not long after. Over the years, he has built up a strong network of artists, dealers and art lovers.

Anthony is primarily interested in the long term: building a good reputation and investing in the careers of talented artists. He also uses that mindset at Catawiki. He hopes to really put the Catawiki modern art auction on the map by including beautiful works in his auctions and by winning the trust of his sellers, buyers and artists. So Anthony takes the utmost care when putting together his auctions. They are full of works that do well on the market, but also feature surprising works which may be new to Catawiki visitors.

Today you no longer see the same quality as 30 or 40 years ago.

  • Over 35 years' experience in Hi-Fi shops
  • Passionate about high-quality sound
  • Very broad knowledge of Hi-Fis

Exceptional lots

Bart Vink

On Saturdays, the young Bart Vink worked in his father’s music shop. He later joined the shop with his brother and, in addition to Bang & Olufsen, concentrated mainly on other high-quality Hi-Fi brands such as Denon, Onkyo, Marantz, Thorens, Dual, and many more. This provided Bart with vast experience in the Hi-Fi world and allowed him to build a large network, from which he is still reaping the benefits.

According to Bart, Hi-Fis from the 70s, 80s and 90s still deliver superior quality and guarantee many hours of listening pleasure. Although Bart would like to come across more Bang & Olufsen, he is always happy to see a nice Sansui amplifier, a Thorens turntable or tape decks by Revox or Akai. He takes particular care that his auctions are all about quality. That’s what he expects from his suppliers, with whom he maintains strong ties. Bart supplies a varied selection every week, for the serious collector and the Hi-Fi hobbyist.

Auctioneer Watches

At a certain moment you realise what makes expensive watches worth the money.

  • 10 years' experience in trade
  • Studied Watchmaking
  • An avid watch collector himself

Exceptional lots

Berry Harleman

We all know the image of a child standing excitedly in front of a store window. Berry Harleman was such a child at the jewellery store window, where he marvelled at the stunning collection of watches on display. The Omega Speedmaster already caught his eye and when he bought one years later, his biggest wish had come true... for the time being. After two months, he sold the watch again. With profit. This way his other passion came into play: trading. Over the years both passions continued to grow unabated, just like his collection of watches. It goes without saying that Berry Harleman has therfore acquired a vast knowledge of watches and their worth. Moreover, he is able to estimate their value at a glance. When he sees a brand that he isn't familiar with or a limited model, the trick is to estimate its value by logical reasoning and solid research. By composing his auctions carefully, he expects to be able to offer more and more interesting and exclusive models on Catawiki.

If you're not interested in the story behind the objects, you better choose a different profession.

  • Extensive experience gained from working at auction houses
  • Degree in History of Art
  • Vast network in the Parisian Montmartre neighbourhood

Exceptional lots

As a young girl, Cécilia Chol visited the centuries-old castles in the 'Vallée de Loire' with her parents, which ignited her passion for history. The stories that the historical objects held about their previous owners really intrigued her. However, it was only during her time in Law school that Cécilia Chol was inspired to become an auctioneer after visiting an auction house. Consequently, she went on to study History of Art at the Louvre and then finished a course in auctioneering. In addition, she gained valuable experience by working at the prestigious Artcurial auction house for three years where she laid eyes on thousands of objects. This has trained Cécilia Chol's eye to recognise objects in an instant. This skill comes in very handy when she has to appraise modern and classical art for her auctions. Besides creating beautiful auctions, Cécilia Chol emphasises the importance of establishing good connections with sellers and buyers. If a very exclusive object is submitted, she is very happy to make the effort to see it in person.

An object becomes even more beautiful when you know the story behind it.

  • Doctor of Arts and Culture
  • Art teacher
  • Set up own jewellery trade

Exceptional lots

Christine Barrat

Christine Barrat is like a modern day Indiana Jones. Always looking for adventure, and hunting for new treasures and experiences throughout Europe and Asia. Not surprising, given her childhood surrounded by collectors and artistic family members. They brought the craziest things home that they acquired during their travels, from mummified cats to strange stones. As a 10-year-old girl, she spent hours examining the stones under a microscope with her brother, who has become a renowned geochemist. Christine took the artistic route and paid for her studies by selling gems and antiques that she’d found at markets. She used these skills to train to become a Doctor of Arts and Culture. She crossed all of Europe and much of the world for her work developing art programmes. She also set up her own jewellery business and gave lessons in art. Now she uses the network and life experience that she has built up as a Catawiki auctioneer.

Christine thinks that the story behind an object is what really matters: lovely works of art and jewels become even more beautiful. She places a great deal of importance on tracing the background of her auction items, and regularly approaches the artists herself. It is this care and attention to detail that make her auctions so special.

Auctioneer Stamps

I’m fascinated by the journeys of postage stamps.

  • Worked for a reputable stamp shop
  • Avid collector
  • Extensive trade experience

Exceptional lots

Daan Hartevelt

Every postage stamp tells a story. When was it made, where did it come from, what type of post was it on and what route did it travel? Daan Hartevelt is fascinated by all these questions. As a boy, he really enjoyed finding the answers. It didn’t take Daan long to start collecting, and he soon found himself attending stamp fairs. He viewed thousands of stamps, made contact with traders... and sometimes made bad purchases. However, we learn by making mistakes. These experiences, his collection and his work in a reputable stamp shop have given him unrivalled knowledge of postage stamps.

Daan now uses this knowledge at Catawiki, where he is an auctioneer for the Dutch postage stamp auction. He uses scanned images to assess the lots on offer. And if he has any doubts about the condition of the stamp? Then only a certificate of authenticity will do. Fortunately, he has good relationships with his suppliers. As a result, his weekly auctions are highly varied, filled with interesting collections and exclusive postage stamps.

This is how Daniel learned to really look at classical art, with all its symbolism, while also building up a huge network and thorough knowledge of the art market.

Daniel now uses this knowledge as a Catawiki auctioneer. Quality is the priority for his auctions and, in order to meet his high standards, Daniel maintains great relationships with his suppliers. He also makes regular visits to view fine collections. After I came into contact with taxidermy by accident, it became my hobby, my work and my passion.

  • 35 years' experience
  • Almost 20 years' work experience for important clients
  • Lecturer in taxidermy
  • Vast network

Exceptional lots

It all started when David Legett noticed a dead owl along the side of the road from his delivery van. The animal looked so beautiful that he couldn't just leave it there. He found a taxidermist that was willing to stuff the animal. After this, 12 more animals followed, which set him back quite a lot of money. David Legett therefore decided to do it himself. He sold his stuffed animals and with the profits he bought a book and the necessary tools and went to work. His animals were wanted instantly and his customer base grew constantly. It even grew so fast that he was able to turn it into a profitable business. He even supplied taxidermied animals to the national theatre company and worked for other important clients. After 35 years in this field of work, David Legett has built a vast network that he gladly consults for Catawiki. He hopes to create high quality auctions with animals that are stuffed in a tasteful, natural way. Thanks to his experience he is well-equipped to estimate the condition of the animals from just a few photos. Besides this, David Legett has a trained eye for all kinds of fossils, minerals and replicas and for this reason, he is able to create a varied Natural History auction each week.

I was always just fascinated by reliable motorcycles that wouldn't break down on the road.

  • 15 years' trade experience
  • Has been a collector and enthusiast for 30 years
  • Writer for various moped magazines

No one in his family has a thing for mopeds, scooters or motorcycles, but since he was twelve years old, Davide Marelli was fascinated by them. Especially classic motorcycles from the 1950s and naturally the Vespa captured his attention. Therefore, it didn't take long before he started to collect them himself and along with it came selling mopeds. When he sold one, he bought two to take its place. By doing so he has been working with mopeds and scooters his entire life. Besides endlessly tinkering with mopeds, Davide Marelli also likes to take them for a ride, for example when he crossed Argentina on a mini scooter. This story was published in the British magazine 'Scootering'. Thanks to his great interest, Davide Marelli knows the Italian classic motorcycle market through and through with its accompanying traders and collectors. His network is his greatest asset, because Davide Marelli is a true people person. He gladly takes a bit more time to tell potential sellers about Catawiki, or to help them take the right photos or just to have a chat about their shared passion. In this way he gladly contributes to the increasing popularity of Catawiki among moped collectors.

Deborah has worked with gems her whole life, as an appraiser, and also as a sales manager for large international companies such as Idar-Oberstein in Germany, one of the major centres for gemstone trading in the world. She knows the world of gemstones and jewellery through and through.

This background perfectly complements Dennis van Kampen's work at Catawiki. His years of experience enable him to identify and value silverware. In addition, he has an eye for the goldsmith's technique and the hallmark that also indicates its origin. Each week, Dennis van Kampen strives to compose an auction that he can be proud of. Special pieces are given additional attention, and so does the composition of the auction. When the auction is about to close, he experiences the excitement of the bidders, curious to find out how his carefully presented lots perform.

Desi van Rhee lives and breathes art and culture. Yet she was actually studying Psychology when she was inspired by a roommate to study Art History. She switched courses and that was the best decision of her life! Even while she was studying, her goal was to work in an auction house. So once she had completed her degree, she did an internship at Sotheby's auction house. She enjoyed her time there so much that she ended up staying – for over ten years! That's how Desi came to deal with every aspect of auctioneering, all equally fascinating. Her work has since developed into a lifelong passion, which found a home at Catawiki.

Desi thoroughly enjoys working at Catawiki. She loves sifting through every item that comes up for auction, so much so that she works day and night trying to get to the bottom of everything. Then she cannot wait to see how the auction will go. For Desi, Catawiki is the future of the auction industry: there are literally no limits and people who would normally not visit an auction can easily join in. Meanwhile, she is continuing to learn new skills and travelling many miles to put together the best possible auctions.

One of Diana van der Valk’s first memories is of playing with the Game & Watch Donkey Kong video game that was a present from her aunt. She was immediately hooked and saved money from all sorts of Saturday jobs in order to buy more games. Since then, she has collected anything to do with computer games, and she has built up one of the largest Nintendo collections in the Netherlands. Trading is in Diana’s blood, which came in handy for her hobby. She completed her collection with the help of fairs across the globe and various visits to the US and Akihabara, the Japanese gaming mecca. This resulted in an enormous network, which she can always rely on.

Before starting as a computer and video games auctioneer at Catawiki, Diana had her own games shop for more than 10 years, where she bought and sold games. She has handled literally thousands of video games. This has provided her with a wealth of knowledge, experience and social development. Diana always finds it exciting to see new arrivals in her mailbox. So make sure to rummage through your attic to see what’s still there. You never know what it’s worth now!

Like many others, Dirk-Jan began reading comics as a child. He began with Donald Duck and Spike & Suzy. But after picking up another series from the comic book store, he became hooked on collecting. He had a cupboard full of comics in no time at all. He also attended fairs and developed an eye for the more popular comics, awaking his dealer instincts. Dirk-Jan ended up working at the major fairs himself, and helped at the stand of a large comic strip specialist. As a result, he acquired tremendous knowledge about various comics and their value. In later years, he was also involved in organising comic strip fairs.

Dirk-Jan can now be found at the Catawiki digital comic strip fair. With his experience, he can quickly assess the lots that arrive; he pays particular attention to how interesting they are for comic strip lovers and collectors and their value. Antiquarian and sought-after comics that are no longer easy to find are especially attractive to comic aficionados, and can be a good way to start a collection.

Dolph Bodes' father came home with the most beautiful jewels and jewellery on a weekly basis that were to be sold in their own jewellery store, so it was no surprise that Dolph Bode's love and fascination for gemstones runs in his blood. After studying in the Netherlands, he left for California to study Gemology at the renowned Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Dolph Bode can now officially call himself a graduate gemologist and after having worked in the United States for a while, he returned to the Netherlands to work in the family business. As a consequence, he is often found at fairs in Italy and Asia, where he expands his network and stays informed about the latest developments. Gemstones keep inspiring and fascinating Dolph Bode because he keeps seeing new things in them. Each stone is different and the jewellery which complements it keeps surprising him. In his opinion that is what makes his work so interesting. Each week uses his gemological knowledge and experience to assess the latest submissions. A simple Agfa Clack, a gift from his father, was all it took for Ed van Mil to get the collecting bug. Through friends and acquaintances, markets, fairs and antique shops, his collection of Kodak cameras grew until it numbered over one thousand. It was no surprise he was named European Collector of the Year in 2011. A title to be proud of. Meanwhile, Ed has also been the secretary of the Fotografica Association for years. Becoming an auctioneer at Catawiki was the logical next step for this undeniable expert in cameras.

With 25 years’ experience, Ed has built up a huge network in the field. He knows many suppliers personally, which helps him assess the lots on offer. He would really like to see a deluxe Leica from the 1960s turn up. There is a huge market for these cameras. He enjoyed travelling around Europe for his collection, to seek out the best pieces and become acquainted with like-minded collectors. As an extra challenge, Eric focused on collecting so-called prison coins. These coins were used as currency within prisons. He is only able to track these coins down by fully tapping into his network.

This international network is Eric’s greatest strength. He can fully exploit this as a Catawiki auctioneer in order to establish good contacts as Catawiki expands across Europe. Eric particularly enjoys getting to know other enthusiastic collectors. He also oversees various other auctions. With his collecting background, he has very broad knowledge which allows him to contribute to the high-quality, diversified auctions.

Over 20 years later, he has every reason to claim to be an expert at assessing antiques.

This has come in handy for Erik as an auctioneer. Thanks to his experience, he can also use photographs to get a good impression of the huge variety of items that come his way. Contact with the seller is also an important aspect. For example, to definitively determine from what material an item is made. An antique’s value is not always the deciding factor for Erik. He really loves including antiques that show a lot of love and craftsmanship in his auction.

Some years later, he opted for a stable, permanent job, but his passion for watches did not end here. He now fully focuses on watches.

Erwin Dekker loves the fact that he can make full use of his expertise through Catawiki. By not only appraising watches but also by advising sellers on their presentation. He knows that bad photos can make the difference between a guaranteed sell and a let down. For this reason, Erwin Dekker likes to give advice on good photos or a catchy text. Francisco Carrion's family is passionate about cars. Ever since he can remember, he has been surrounded by the cars that his father was selling. His grandfather regularly took him to car shows with classic car models. It is therefore no surprise that Francisco Carrion has developed a predilection for pre-war cars. He loves the relatively simple technique and loves finding usable parts to revamp his classic cars back to their original condition. He therefore has plenty to write about for the various car magazines that publish his articles. Francisco Carrion regularly visits fairs and rallies where he takes every opportunity to tell his fellow enthusiasts about Catawiki. Consequently, the number of submitted cars has increased steadily. Naturally, these cars don't all end up in his auction. Francisco Carrion has a great eye for detail and always asks for clear photos of all the important parts of the car when in doubt. By cleverly negotiating with his sellers, he manages to gather more and more attractive classic cars to his auction.

This has taught him a lot about the Spanish antiques market and he became knowledgeable in the valuation of antique objects. Meanwhile, Francisco Alvarez has gained years of valuable experience which all came together at Catawiki. For his Antiques and Curio auctions he comes into contact with a lot of different objects. From coffee grinders to wooden dolls to Art Deco lamps and bric-à-brac cabinets. Francisco Alvarez has seen it all and therefore is able to estimate which objects go together nicely in an auction. All of my experience comes together harmoniously in my work as an auctioneer.

  • Worked for more than 30 years in the musical instrument industry
  • Experience in the purchase, sale and marketing of musical instruments
  • Passion for guitars

Frans van Ingen knows almost everything there is to know about musical instruments. He also worked as a salesman and marketer for almost 30 years with one of the largest musical instrument chains in the Netherlands. He has seen almost every side of the industry, which has given him a wealth of experience. And of course his network is no small feat: name a place and Frans could probably indentify the most prominent seller there.

As an auctioneer, Frans brings all that knowledge together harmoniously. He started to gain an eye for instruments at the age of six, when he held his first guitar. From a photograph, he can see immediately if the original bridge is there, whether the logo is correct and whether that is the right pickguard for that model. Frans always manages to put together a great auction using his knowledge and social skills. And if he’s looking for a special selection? Then he calls up his old customers. Together they rummage around the storeroom in search of the perfect addition to his Catawiki auction.

The craftsmanship in old slot machines is fascinating.

  • Travelled the world buying slot machines
  • An avid collector for more than 30 years
  • International network

Exceptional lots

Frederik Jamees

As a teenager, Frederik Jamees was fascinated by jukeboxes from the 50s. At first it was the music, but later the craftsmanship in them also caught his eye. As far as he was concerned, the boring 80s machines were no match. He soon became interested in other antique machines, such as slot machines from the twenties (one-armed bandits), Coca Cola vending machines and gramophones. But actually, any devices that are at least partially mechanical and in working order will pique his interest. Frederik attended fairs and auction houses around the world for his collection, passionately expanding it. This provided him with a large network, plenty of knowledge about human nature and a wealth of information about machines.

As an auctioneer, Frederik has seen a lot of machines. So he knows how important it is to establish whether a machine is still in its original condition, which has a significant impact on the price. Frederik also spends a lot of time working on how the lots he is offered are presented, and tries to help both sellers and buyers where he can. Personally, he would love to see a rare Mills Dewey Floor Machine from the early 1900s, but a Watling ‘Bird of Paradise’ slot machine or a Rock-Ola commando wouldn’t go amiss either.

Ger van Oers describes himself as a real ‘magpie child’. Ever since he was a child, he would collect everything that was not nailed down. And once the collection was complete? He would simply start collecting something else. Only his pen collection has stood the test of time. All that collecting and selling gave Ger a real instinct for trading. He had a flourishing online pen business for years and later opened his own antiques and curio shop.

Pens remain close to Ger’s heart. So he is the ideal auctioneer for the pens & writing instruments auction, where there are plenty of interesting lots on offer. Montblanc fountain pens are especially desirable. The limited edition fountain pens from the 80s and 90s generate enthusiastic bids, and German Pelikan fountain pens also do well. Ger maintains close relationships with his sellers in the relatively small world of pens and, as a result, puts together a great auction every week.

Gerben van IJken

An entire city was built in Gerben van Ijken’s childhood home. A Lego city, of course, built from dozens of sets that he received as a child. He was quite fascinated by the multifunctional Lego blocks. And once he had assembled everything following the manual’s instructions? It was demolished and combined with other sets to build his own creations. Lego has always been a passion for Gerben, and he has followed its fortunes closely, including attending international fairs. His ultimate dream was a job where he could work with Lego... and now his fantasy is a reality!

Gerben loves every minute of his job as an auctioneer. Sets from the 50s and 60s can still be combined with modern sets, which makes the market very lively. Lego is also a good investment because the collection changes every two years and sets are never re-released. Auctions that include unique sets, like the limited edition Millennium Falcon, are always very exciting! Gerben particularly enjoys being able to make so many people happy at his Lego auction. After all, that’s what Lego is for!

  • Owned his own Oriental rug store for more than 20 years
  • Purchased rugs himself in the Far East
  • Extensive network

Exceptional lots

Gijs Hamming

Gijs Hamming first encountered Oriental rugs through the family of an Armenian classmate. This family had made exclusive rugs for over a hundred years. Using these rugs as start-up capital, Gijs and his classmate hit the market. By seeing, feeling and smelling the rugs, Hamming learned more about his merchandise, which set off a real passion for Oriental rugs. After his friend died, Gijs continued the company, running two of his own stores. He now has twenty years of experience behind him, filled with travel to bazaars in the Far East, negotiating and selling.

It is clear that Gijs has built up a wealth of knowledge, which ensures he knows what types of rugs he is being offered as an auctioneer. The origin of a rug and its value can usually be determined by the patterns, colours and knotting techniques. When in doubt, Gijs consults one of his many reference books. He ensures that the finest rugs appear on Catawiki: such as the more affordable rugs from the 50s to the 80s, and the expensive rugs from the beginning of the 20th century.

Guido Mascini’s love of good wine started when he opened his own restaurant. Many wine importers approached him and introduced him to a wide range of quality wines. He was really fascinated by the differences in the various wines, both when it came to taste and price. He wanted to know more! After various wine courses and visits to wine chateaus in Europe and Africa, Guido could call himself a true connoisseur. After selling his restaurant he worked at various auction houses. In addition to being an auctioneer, he also has a coordinating role for the wine, port and whiskey auctions at Catawiki.

Guido Mascini is responsible for the organisational aspects and, together with the auctioneers, is always looking for any opportunities for new or themed auctions. He relies on the expertise of the auctioneers to present a tasteful selection of wines each week. • Boasts over 17 years' experience
  • Set up a flourishing cartographic business

Exceptional lots

Harald Fredriks

A wonderful decoration, a memento of your genealogical origins or a lasting investment. There are plenty of good reasons to buy an antique map or city plan. Harald Fredriks knows all about this, which is why, as both auctioneer and aficionado, he puts together wonderful cartographic auctions.

Harald discovered his passion during his time at the Ministry of Defence. As a ‘geographic information officer’, he had to analyse and map (potential) mission areas using not just satellite images but often recent or, if not available, outdated maps. That was enough to pique his interest and, after working in the army for almost ten years, he established a flourishing antiquarian cartographic shop. Maps, city plans, topographical prints and cityscapes: Harald has handled them all.

Auctioneering fits him like a glove. He knows most antiquarians in the relatively small cartographic world personally. Many special maps are put up for auction every week. Harald would most like to see rare maps from the era of the Dutch United East India Company (VOC), with secret trade routes. Sadly the chance of this happening is quite small given how rare such maps are. He also likes to include more ‘ordinary’ cartographic charts in his auctions, to ensure buyers have a varied and attractive selection to choose from.

That was quite a big deal at the time, but as he grew older, the more exclusive watches began to appeal to him. He was a stallholder at the well-known Bermondsey antiques market in London for years, where he bought and sold watches. There he learnt a lot and has established a vast network. Since then, Jamie Brindle opened his own jewellery shop which has been going for eleven years, specialising in watches. With more than 25 years of trade experience, Jamie Brindle has acquired an extensive knowledge of watches which he gladly puts to good use at Catawiki. He now knows exactly what to pay attention to when appraising watches. The clockwork itself is especially important to examine. It could indicate whether the watch is in good condition, and the manufacturer always adds his own characteristics to the clockwork. Despite his vast knowledge, auctioneer Jamie Brindle is taken by surprise on a daily basis by interesting submissions, such as decent quality watches from Eastern Europe which are popular in the UK, and limited editions from his favourite brands.

Joromir Budi comes from a family of collectors. It is therefore no surprise that he was already frequenting the local flea markets as a teenager in search of a good find. Antique furniture especially captured his attention and inspired him to learn about carpentry. This is also how Joromir Budi got to know the auction industry. The active character, the interaction and the great variety of objects were exactly what he was looking for. For twelve years he worked for various auction houses, from New York to Berlin and online ones.

During his years as an appraiser, Joromir Budi has gained extensive knowledge of various types of antiques and the market. This knowledge helps him evaluate the wide variety of lots at Catawiki. His carpenter's eye cannot be overlooked either. It gives him a feel for the wood and the craftsmanship of the object and he can detect traces of machine processing. Therefore, he is very capable of appraising his lots, but according to Joromir Budi, making connections and building trust are just as important. That's why he keeps in touch with buyers and sellers so he is able to establish more and more successful auctions every time.

Jay McLellan's interest in glassware derives from his background in IT, where he worked on the organisation of (museological) data in large databases. As one of its first pioneers, he established a reliable online glass trade with the database. Meanwhile, after more than 15 years of successful trade, Jay McLellan may call himself an expert in the field of glassware.

This expertise Jay McLellan now uses for Catawiki, where he appraises Dutch and Italian glass objects. He is very aware of his responsibility as an auctioneer and always tries to stress the importance of lot descriptions that are as complete and elaborate as possible. For this reason, Jay McLellan particularly values good photos and gladly explains to sellers how to take these. Only then the details, the shapes and the craftsmanship will live up to their true potential for a good valuation and an exciting bid.

There’s nothing better than experiencing music through a physical product.

  • Over 10 years' experience
  • Worked for many years managing a record store
  • A vinyl enthusiast and collector himself
Jeroen Hamelink

Jeroen Hamelink developed a love of vinyl at a young age. He enjoyed browsing through his parents’ collection and choosing something to listen to. He still enjoys the whole experience of putting on a record. Jeroen has also built up an impressive collection of vinyl and CDs. This is in part thanks to his work as a branch manager in a record shop, where he came across thousands of records and CDs and learned the market inside and out. He now uses that knowledge at Catawiki.

Despite the advent of digital listening options, Jeroen notes that there is increasing demand for vinyl. And not just from collectors. More and more young people prefer to buy their music on vinyl, in addition to having a digital copy. They are often interested in the classics like Led Zeppelin, The Doors and The Beatles records. Jeroen also focuses on lesser-known genres using themed auctions, where a lot of vinyl is on offer. This helps him to create multifaceted auctions, with real gems for vinyl connoisseurs and good quality popular vinyl for enthusiasts.

The historic value that watches embody really fascinates me.

  • Extensive knowledge of watches
  • A collector himself
  • Excellent network

Exceptional lots

When he was 15 years old, the time had come for Jeroen Trapman to take the next step towards adulthood: get a good watch. He immersed himself in watches, researching them on internet forums, in magazines and in reference books. After six months, he had his first watch: a nice Seiko. By this point he was completely obsessed with watches and immediately began saving up again for the next one. Everything about them fascinates him: the design, the technology and their historical value. It is amazing to think that a watch might have been worn by a mountain climber on Mount Everest, deep in the ocean or even on the moon.

Jeroen can now call himself a real expert in the watch field. He knows all the brands inside out, from vintage lines to the new models due out next month. He finds it particularly satisfying to see how supply and demand come together at Catawiki, and he really enjoys advising bidders and sellers. Collectors can find that one special model to complete their collection, while other bidders who just want a nice watch can get exactly what they came for. Personally, Jeroen loves it when a vintage Rolex comes along.

  • Almost 20 years' experience as a goldsmith
  • Owns his own goldsmith business

Exceptional lots

Joaquin Fernandez Cebrian

Although Joaquin Fernandez Cebrian has always loved watches, his passion for watches really started during a tennis tournament that he took part in. Breitling, the famous watch manufacturer, hosted a small exhibition at the tournament with the newest models. It was love at first sight for the young Joaquin as he started saving money for his first Breitling. Since then he has been a real watch fanatic, keeping informed on all the new trends in the watch industry, takes part in fairs and regularly meets up with other enthusiasts. Unlike most enthusiasts, Joaquin Fernandez Cebrian doesn't like showing off his watches. He prefers keeping them discrete. According to Joaquin, this discretion doesn't apply to the watches at Catawiki; these need to be as well-presented as possible. He therefore regularly advises sellers on how to make good photos, on cleaning watches properly and giving the right information. This way the bidder knows exactly what he or she is bidding on and the seller ultimately gets higher revenues. Thanks to his experience as a goldsmith, Joaquin Fernandez Cebrian is able to evaluate the quality of golden watches and watches with inlaid jewels correctly. He loves doing this because each week he finds it incredibly exciting to see which beautiful watches are on offer.

Job Kwakman has had a passion for books since childhood. After studying Art, Culture & Media, he was introduced to the world of auctions and bookselling. His love was really awakened while working at an auction house. There, Job had hundreds of books go through his hands, and spent time researching the history and the stories behind them before including them in the catalogue.

Job has taken to Catawiki like a duck to water. Every day he is offered a variety of books that are special for one reason or another. This ranges from a beautifully illustrated children’s book to an old and rare manuscript. Together with the seller, he takes the greatest care to present each item to the best of its advantage in order to highlight what makes it special. As a result he puts together auctions with his colleagues that really inspire bidders into bidding on that beautiful or rare edition.

Exceptional lots

Joep Egmond

George Harrison, Brian May and Paul McCartney. They are all rock stars, but they also have another thing in common: they all started on an Egmond guitar. The factory where these guitars were made belonged to Joep Egmond’s father, who also had a musical instruments shop. Joep was born above the shop. So it was no surprise that he took over the store. He has gained invaluable expertise over more than 35 years, during which time he has encountered almost every possible instrument.

Joep knows that musical instruments are for emotional people. An instrument is their bread and butter, and therefore a good investment. That is how it was at the shop and it is no different at Catawiki. He likes to discuss the lots on offer with his suppliers. And thanks to his expertise and business instinct, he always puts together a great auction. Joep most likes to see the rarer instruments, such as a handmade Steinway piano. But he is also happy to include a beautiful violin or djembe in his auctions.

  • Great passion for classic motorcycles

Exceptional lots

John Searle

John Searle was 18 years old when he bought his first motorcycle: a BMW R60. At the time, the R60 was already a classic, but he still rides it regularly. His love for classic motorcycles has never decreased, not even when John Searle filmed and directed TV shows about the newest models. In addition, he kept participating in classic motorcycle races throughout Europe, sometimes with his wife in the sidecar. The motorcycles that John Searle uses for these races are meticulously maintained in his own workshop, where he has lately also been carrying out his work for Catawiki. Surrounded by his passion, as it should be.

For his auctions, John Searle finds it important to check the details of the submitted motorcycles thoroughly. If, for instance, the serial numbers of the frame and the motorcycle match, you are certain this is a completely authentic motorcycle that would do well at auction. Furthermore, John Searle has gained important insights into people's behaviour through his years of experience. He therefore gladly talks to buyers, sellers and enthusiasts that share his passion.

Jos Zinkstok

When Jos Zinkstok received a packet of stamps for his sixth birthday, he was not impressed. Fortunately his father was happy with the gift and immediately began collecting stamps, even becoming a postage stamp director. As a result the postage stamp association regularly met at the home of young Jos. Through this exposure, his love for stamps slowly grew – something which Jos is still pleased about to this day. He started his own collection and visited many fairs, auctions and postage stamp dealers. When his father died prematurely, it was left to him to sell his collection. That was when he discovered the trade and his trading instinct. Jos decided to start his own stamp auction. Four times a year, collectors attended from across the country because there were always good stamps to be found. This went on for 28 years.

After nearly 30 years, a new opportunity presented itself. Joining as an auctioneer in 2012, Jos brought the first postage stamp auction to Catawiki and it developed further. He has put all his knowledge and experience into the stamp auctions. His sense of presentation and eye for beautiful stamps make the auction a success. He also regularly sees old customers or well-known sellers pop up online.

Exceptional lots

Jurry Heshusius

Jurry Heshusius has every right to call himself a comic strip connoisseur. He began reading comics at an early age, and it didn’t take long before he was collecting them as well. In addition to comics, he also collected screen prints and pictures, primarily from artists such as Enki Bilal and Moebius. He went to fairs and comic book shops at home and abroad in search of exclusive editions for his collection. Jurry was soon noticed at the local comic book shop, where he was offered a job. Here he gained over 15 years' work experience. Purchasing, sales, appraising, anything to do with the trade in comics, Jurry did it.

He is now fulfilling that role again, but this time online with Catawiki. As an auctioneer, he is constantly busy assessing comics and building relationships with bidders and sellers. The exclusive editions he used to spend hours hunting for in comic book shops now come to him. With his experience, he can usually assess the value at a glance. And if that doesn’t work, he has a large network that he can turn to for advice.

Keen on travelling, Kurt Salchi started various bookshops in Paris and later he even started a publishing house for which he travelled across Europe and built an important network of writers, illustrators, publishers and shopkeepers.

Thanks to his time in France, Kurt Salchi knows quite a bit of French. Consequently, he primarily takes on the German and French literature auctions. He encounters a great variety of books. Many of which he has never sold or published himself. Like no other he knows how to value these books. Kurt Salchi especially takes into account the international character of the auctions. From an early age, Leo Setz and art have been inseparable. It all started with drawing and painting but later he started working for his father at his auction and art trade business. This then inspired him to create his own flourishing art and picture framing business. In this way, Leo Setz has been obsessed with art his entire life. He loves sifting through a large inventory, deciding what to do with each piece.

All this experience makes Leo Setz an asset to Catawiki. Through examining paintings to such a great extent, he now knows exactly which details he has to pay attention to. And through his work as a restorer, he has learned how to see the true potential of a painting, beyond any dust or dirt that it may contain. You could say that she has been spoiled, but luckily she has not lost her eye for other antique pottery. She has a particular weakness for Delftware, which was the subject of her art history thesis.

Leonne acquired a broad knowledge during her studies and has since learned where and how to find out more. A skill that is now incredibly useful to her as an auctioneer. With her grounding in antique pottery and the international art trade, she is able to estimate the value of many objects. Leonor Arnó Pons has always been fascinated by foreign cultures and their artistic expressions. Here and there she already bought some ethnic and tribal jewellery, but only when she went backpacking in India at age 20 she really started to collect tribal objects. Whilst working as a manager of a gallery for 25 years, she kept collecting items. Ultimately, Leonor Arnó Pons chose to follow her passion and she started trading and selling tribal and ethnic jewellery in her own online store. She travelled the whole world for her work and saw how these objects were really used. This gave her the insight and knowledge that are essential for a good valuation.

The knowledge and experience that Leonor Arnó Pons has acquired now comes together at Catawiki, where she takes care of the ethnic jewellery auction. In her auctions she makes a clear distinction between modern jewellery and the rarer, antique jewellery. Although both are produced with the necessary craftsmanship, antique jewellery is especially appealing to collectors. Leonor Arnó Pons does extensive research to retrieve the origin of the objects, locating them with 1 kilometre accuracy. Her travel experience and her own collection are indispensable here. If she is unable to retrieve an object's origin, she delves into her large collection of reference works and catalogues.

Exceptional lots

Lisa Kok

Lisa Kok has always been interested in art. Unfortunately, she was not blessed with the genes of an artist, so she opted for the theoretical side and studied art history. She successfully rounded this off with internships at various international auction houses. She also opened her own gallery with the aim of exhibiting promising young artists. After a few years, she moved to Hamburg, where she again worked at an auction house. Until she came across Catawiki.

For Lisa, modern art offers a unique look at the spirit of the age. It acts as a mirror held up before you, shaped by the artist. She views the art on offer with that in mind, and is always able to make a varied selection. She likes to include work by well-known artists such as Käthe Kollwitz and Herbert Zangs, but as yet unknown artists can also make an appearance. Art Nouveau and Art Deco characterise a period where different art styles appeared in quick succession and flourished within a short period. The result was a form of expression that increasingly captivated Marleen Deiters.

Marleen learned to view art from an early age, and has developed a taste for travel. She felt completely at home working at a gallery in France. This was the source of her passion for applied art from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. When she decided to return to the Netherlands, she had built up a fine collection herself. Partly because of this, Marleen started her own art trade and spent 15 years buying and selling in her gallery and at international fairs. She built up a large clientele base and has handled many unique items.

In addition, the condition and completeness of the product(s) are of great importance. Marvin Reigersberg subjects each item to a thorough inspection prior to including them in his auctions.

Art can create a personal connection between the object and the viewer.

  • Master's degree in Film & Visual arts
  • Extensive experience as curator, writer and researcher
  • Various publications, has organised workshops and lectures
  • Wide artistic interest and knowledge

Exceptional lots

Maurizio Buquicchio

Ever since his childhood it was clear that Maurizio Buquicchio was a gifted visual-spatial learner. He liked to draw and was interested in film and art. His mother was a painter and they regularly visited museums together. It was therefore no surprise that Maurizio chose to study Film History. This degree stressed Maurizio Buquicchio's visual talents and his predilection for art. For his PhD he researched the relationship between the Bauhaus art school and film. Since then he has participated in various projects as a researcher, writer and curator. In addition, he has worked for the Berliner Ikono TV, where he has established a vast network of galleries, artists and museums. Furthermore, he has also worked in Amsterdam as an art curator.

For each of his auctions he strives to put together a cohesive collection of lots, as if you are visiting an exhibition, a skill that he learnt through his experience as a curator. Moreover, Maurizio Buquicchio is always open to exploring all different art forms that are submitted and is inspired by what he encounters every day.

Watches are a miracle of tiny parts all working precisely together.

  • An avid collector himself
  • Extensive knowledge of the trade
  • Fascinated by mechanics

Exceptional lots

Michael Schumann

Michael Schumann’s fascination with watches started at an early age. He was especially fascinated by all the parts which together combine to make a working machine. Later he started collecting watches, building a collection of more than 300 timepieces. To develop his collection, Michael read a lot about watches and exchanged and traded at watch fairs. He also enjoys studying watches inside and out so he knows exactly how they work.

Michael is thrilled by the number of different watches offered at Catawiki. He is hooked on watches with fine mechanics, but nicely designed quartz watches also have their place. Michael is a strict but fair auctioneer. He thinks it’s very important to include photos of the mechanics and inspection reports which show whether the watches have been properly maintained.

I always look for the X-factor when assessing a lot.

  • Art historian
  • TMV Certified Registry Appraiser
  • Experience with numerous auction houses
  • Broad knowledge of antiques

Exceptional lots

Michel Karis

Michel Karis was brought up to love art and culture. His father is an artist and his family regularly visited museums. To continue his education, Michel chose to study art history in Leiden, with a focus on applied art. He was particularly attracted to the study of objects from daily life through the centuries, sometimes beautiful and sometimes quite ordinary. Michel was introduced to the auction world during an internship at Sotheby’s, which he found really appealing. After completing his studies he went to work at auction houses, first in Den Bosch and then in The Hague. This laid the foundations of his current expertise and the thousands of objects he came across gave him great pleasure, as did contact with various sellers and, above all, the auction itself!

It’s no surprise that Catawiki is the perfect place for Michel Karis. He loves the dynamic company, where he can work much faster than at a regular auction house. His appraiser diploma and vast experience means he can value all types of curios and antiques. Michel puts aside his own taste and instead looks for an X-factor in each object; that certain something that makes an object special. This enables him to put together varied auctions for bidders looking for something extraordinary.

  • International work experience at auction houses and museums
  • Stresses the importance of personal interactions

Exceptional lots

Michiel Vliegenthart

For Michiel Vliegenthart, a visit to a museum was like a visit to a theme park. His parents were avid art lovers, so this became an important part of his upbringing. With a passion for art being part of his DNA, he chose to work at a local auction house as a student. He soon became an expert in paintings, watercolours and drawings from the 19th and 20th century. After working in France for a few years, he worked at Sotheby's auction house in Amsterdam. With all these years of experience, Michiel Vliegenthart started working for an art museum, where he focused on the professionalisation of the museum as the museum's deputy director.

Overall, Michiel Vliegenthart has built an impressive CV which makes him an especially apt auctioneer at Catawiki. His experience has taught him to recognise beauty beyond his own tastes and preferences, which enables him to include a varied collection of paintings in his auctions. Michiel Vliegenthart enjoys sharing his passion with buyers and sellers and underlines the importance of personal interactions, which is greatly appreciated. By doing so, he strives to create auctions that he can be proud of each week and he is as excited as the buyers are when the auction is about to close.

Memorabilia often have real emotional value.

  • Visits all the major fairs and conventions
  • Was a dealer in memorabilia
  • Still a major collector himself

Exceptional lots

Mike Saffrie came into contact with film at an early age, through his parents’ VCR and the cinema. He didn’t just enjoy films – he also wanted to know everything about how they were made. From this interest, Mike became mesmerised by memorabilia: everything that has something to do with films. He soon built up a large collection, making various trips to fairs and conventions. There he collected autographs from his idols on various memorabilia. What started out as a hobby soon became far more when he discovered a booming online trade where he could make a good profit.

When an auctioneer vacancy opened up he didn’t hesitate to apply. Because he has done so much trading online in the past, Mike is accustomed to reviewing photos and knows exactly where to look to find more information - very important in this changeable market. For example, the release of a new film can quickly change the price of existing memorabilia. He can assess the value of lots on offer and does his best to include something for the true collector and something for the budding enthusiast in every auction.

A love of gems is in Natasha Mulder’s blood. Her grandfather worked the gold mines searching for the popular precious metal. Inspired by him, she scoured the Australian landscape in search of gemstones. And she found them! This was the start of her collection, and since then she has learned an awful lot about gemstones of all types and sizes. Natasha regularly made her own jewellery. She put this accumulated knowledge into practice when she began working at a jewellers in the Netherlands. There she learned about all aspects of the trade, and a lot about the jewellery market.

Natasha has come across all brands of jewellery and knows exactly what type of gems they use. That knowledge is key to her role as auctioneer as she is in regular contact with bidders and sellers, discussing the quality of the gems and the value of the jewellery that showcases them so perfectly. Natasha likes to see vintage jewellery in her auctions, but also enjoys putting together themed auctions, like the men’s auction, with cufflinks, tie pins, chains and rings. Her jewellery auctions always manage to surprise and excite.

I wanted to honour objects by valuing them.

  • More than 30 years' experience
  • Has worked for various auction houses, including Sotheby's and Christie's
  • Was involved in the establishment of museums and auction houses
  • Vast international network

Exceptional lots

Nicholas Couts' father was a well-known art dealer in Edinburgh and Nicholas started working in his father's shop at a young age. He noticed that maritime and scientific objects were often cataloged erroneously because nobody really knew much about them. That's why he decided to focus on this group of objects and started an auction. With great success, objects from all over the UK were sent to him to be appraised and auctioned off. Soon Sotheby's was knocking on his door and later also Christie's. He has worked for both auction houses for a few years and then established an auction house in photography techniques in Vienna. Even though this again had great success, he exchanged that experience for a chance to establish a museum in Qatar, a project that he was involved with for more than 10 years.

In the end, Nicholas Couts returned to the familiar setting of Edinburgh where he composes the maritime auctions for Catawiki and supports the curio auctions. He finds it a challenge to engage with and keep exciting the bidders, so he likes to experiment with the way he composes his auctions. Via his network, Nicholas Couts aims to create more brand awareness for Catawiki in the international market. Excellent customer service and high quality are at the top of his priority list.

Patricia Verschelling’s interest in wine was awakened 12 years ago when she went to work in a good restaurant. The enthusiastic owners let their staff try the wines so that they could advise the guests properly. That was when Patricia realised she had a talent for correctly identifying the underlying differences. She completed various wine courses including the international WSET level 3 and trained as a viticulturist. After working for a wine importer and in wine shops, she continued her career at an auction house specialising in wines. The auction world was a perfect fit and she now feels completely at home.

Catawiki is the perfect place for Patricia. As an auctioneer, she can rely on her vast knowledge of the world of wine and her well-developed taste. She strives to present a good selection at each auction, where there is a balance between beautiful, special lots and fine drinking wines. Because you cannot taste the wines as a bidder, Patricia always makes sure that the description is perfect. Patrick van Karsen

Patrick van Karsen inherited his love of antiques from his parents. He started collecting antiques as a teenager and attended all the major auctions in Europe. He then developed his passion for general Dutch antiques and colonial silver from the 17th and 18th centuries. And, despite taking his studies in a completely different direction, antiques kept a hold on him. Patrick went on to devote himself to his passion. He has assessed thousands of pieces as an appraiser at various auction houses. He was also eager to soak up the knowledge of the many collectors with whom he came into contact.

Knowledge that Patrick can completely rely on when appraising gold and silver. He has seen and learned to recognise problem items such as restorations, fakes and assembled objects. They say that you have to hold silver to know its worth. However, Patrick believes that assessing items using high resolution photographs also has its advantages. You often notice details and damage more quickly. And with the internet always on hand for research, he can act quickly.

German coins are amongst the most popular in the world. The great diversity, rich history and good condition make them some of the most enjoyable coins to collect. Catawiki therefore needs a real expert and connoisseur to take care of these auction lots. And Philipp Rott is the man! He has been surrounded by antique coins all his life. From a young age, he would visit clubs with his father where coins were compared and traded. It did not take long before collecting became his passion too. In addition to studying cultural history and archaeology at university, Philipp started his own trade in antique German and Russian coins. He has come across thousands of coins and has also started collecting medals.

The challenge for Philipp is to assess a wide range of coins based on photographs. His experience and good relationships with the sellers are his biggest assets here. He always consults with other experts to verify authenticity and assess the price. As an auctioneer, Philipp most likes to see old German gold coins, but he also enjoys including coins that are especially fun to collect in his auctions.

He has continued to collect items throughout his life, during his time in the army, while studying art history and during his job as director of an auction house. He acquired extensive knowledge of militaria and the auction industry in general through his background and his own collecting experience. Catawiki was the next logical step.

Pierre’s knowledge of militaria is indispensable for assessing the great diversity of lots that he sees every day. The smallest details can be crucial for a proper evaluation. If he needs assistance, he always consults his fellow auctioneers. He also enjoys maintaining good relationships with his sellers in order to put together ever better auctions. Pierre notes that Second World War militaria continues to be popular, but there is also increasing interest in the Vietnam War and the Foreign Legion.

Rik Lok has collected comics since he was a boy and, in his own words, only learned to read properly by devouring comics. He learned very early on how to quickly tell the difference between first editions, reprints and special issues. He was fascinated and started trading and selling in order to expand and improve his collection. In the meantime, Rik was also asked to appraise and purchase comics for a specialty comic shop. He has written for various publications about his comic strip research, and over the years he has seen both his knowledge and network grow considerably.

Rik has now turned his hand to working as an auctioneer at Catawiki. He can assess comics very quickly using his knowledge and experience. Is it a special edition, what exact year is it from and... what is it worth? He regularly consults his extensive collection of catalogues and files, with ads from the 30s up to the late 80s, to properly research the lots.

Rinse Kamphuis has the memory of an elephant and enjoys putting it to good use. Inspired, amongst other things, by the TV program ‘Tussen Kunst en Kitsch’ (Antiques Roadshow), he started a business in jewellery and antiques. Along the way, he continued to learn more about different kinds of jewellery and the market as a whole. This in turn quickly taught him how to make the right purchases. Over the years, Rinse has come to specialise in antique and contemporary jewellery.

Rinse is a man of action – he cannot stand sitting still. This makes him an ideal auctioneer. In his years at Catawiki, he has seen many thousands of jewellery lots auctioned, and this experience has added to his huge range of expertise. Under his gaze, items put up for auction reveal their true value. His own preference is for jewellery which bears visible signs of the maker’s skill and craftsmanship. But even common jewellery can find a place in his auctions.

He quickly specialised in 20th-century ceramics and, together with his wife, set up his own art dealership. Rob has since acquired extensive knowledge, which mainly comes from experience. And he still enjoys the research required to determine the origins of objects.

This enthusiasm comes in handy for his work with Catawiki. He sees the auctioneer as a filter between the supplier and the actual auction. That filter is particularly important in the field of ceramics and glass. It ensures beautifully presented auctions and excludes replicas or damaged items.

I love the fact that the delicate mechanics in old cameras still work.

  • Owned his own photo shop
  • Vast knowledge of the market
  • 30 years' experience
  • Passionate photographer

Rob ter Ellen’s love for cameras comes primarily from practical experience. As a nature lover, a camera was indispensable for capturing all that beauty. So from the age of fifteen he could be found walking around clutching a decent SLR camera with a zoom lens. He kept himself busy with photography and went to work at a photo shop. Despite his studies being in a completely different field, Rob was more drawn to trade and he soon started his own photography shop.

The knowledge he has gained over the years comes in handy at Catawiki. He has already seen many of the lots on offer turn up in his own shop. The most important thing for him is to also get good photographs of the lots. As a photographer, Rob knows how important that is for a sale, and he helps his sellers bring out the best from their selection. Personally, he’s always happy to come across Leicas, but he also likes to include mechanical Werra cameras in his auctions.

Rob Boot

Rob Boot’s love for tin toys and model cars goes back a long way. As a child he loved his miniature trains and Dinky Toys. It was Rob’s life-long hobby, until he took over the family wholesale toy business. There the focus was on importing and exporting miniature cars and tin toys from Japan. He loved being able to work with his passion in this way. He got to know the market, developed a respectable international network and even started his own model car line.

As an auctioneer, Rob uses his experience to bring in a good selection and to assess the lots. He mainly looks out for the original details and the condition of model cars and their packaging. Personally, Rob especially likes old tin trains and Dinky and Corgi Toys, but the newer model cars, correct down to the most minute detail, are also included. So both enthusiasts and (new) collectors are amply catered for.

In the years that followed his love for Lego died down, but it never completely vanished. Fifteen years ago took his hobby back up again and started to collect the Lego sets that he didn't have when he was younger, which reinstated his passion like never before. Rolf Nagtzaam started to buy more and more Lego and to be able to afford this hobby, he also started selling. Consequently, he has established a vast network of other collectors, shopkeepers and enthusiasts.

Even though more and more people have become interested in Lego as an investment, for Rolf Nagtzaam it is above all an enjoyable hobby that he likes to spend time on. He composes his auctions with great enthusiasm and he likes to take current events into account to make his auctions even more interesting. In addition, Rolf Nagtzaam strives to keep the quality of his auctions high with a good presentation of the lots, complete sets and neat boxes. Sarah Orford is a woman of action who has built up a solid track record in a very short space of time. At home she was always busy with art, but she also wanted to study French. French won out, which is why she went to live in Paris.

However, Sarah continued to be drawn to art, so she ended up doing a course called 'Manager in the Art Market', which focused on a hands-on approach. Immediately afterwards she began doing internships at auction houses such as Sotheby's and Cabinet Thierry Portier. This inspired her fascination for Asian art, and she worked for several years in a gallery specialising in this field. But Sarah still had not completed her education, so she decided to do a degree in Asian Art and Culture, which took her on a research trip to Taipei.

Now Sarah has finally found her place: at Catawiki! The hugely diverse range of items that she evaluates is enough to satisfy her hunger for learning. She has a particular preference for ceramics, ideally with beautiful decorations or Chinese symbols, which reveal more about the object's origin. Sarah is still in contact with various fellow students working in the art trade, meaning that she can keep up to date with the market and build enthusiasm for Catawiki at the same time.

Simon Breider was always on the lookout at thrift shops, antique markets and fairs. Before he started working as an auctioneer at Catawiki, he spent 25 years using his sharp eye to make a living, looking for that one masterpiece that others just walked past. And he did well. He often sold on objects at a profit, sometimes for ten times the price. Playing the market like that shows a real understanding. He has come across tens of thousands of objects, which gives him a lot of experience. Yet Simon believes that there is still more to learn. As an auctioneer, he is quick to consult one of his specialist books which measure a full seven metres on his bookshelves. Or to consult experts who are happy to advise him on the more exotic items that Catawiki comes across. He is happy to use all that knowledge for his Asian lots, which involve a wide variety of objects, often from the most diverse materials and eras. Simon hopes to auction more Venetian glass for the glass auction: “Top pieces from the 1950s by Dino Martens or Paolo Venini would be wonderful additions to the lovely lots that can now be found at Catawiki.”

A love of auctions is in Taletta Janson’s blood. Her mother worked for an art auction and she became hooked when she went to help as a Saturday job. She discovered all the tension and dynamics associated with auctions and quickly realised this was where she wanted to work.

That was why Taletta decided to study art history: It was her ticket to the auction world. At least until she’d finished her studies, when she remembered another childhood passion: gemstones. She had to work with these precious stones somehow, so she focused on studying gemmology at the English Gemmological Association. Using all the knowledge and skills she acquired, she set up her own handmade jewellery company. Then she came across Catawiki.

Taletta knows that an auctioneer can provide major added value to the gemstone auction. With her knowledge and trained eye, she knows all the qualities that make the difference between a pretty stone and a masterpiece. Taletta loves to come across a beautiful ruby or tanzanite, but also hopes to include more expensive variants of lesser-known gems in her auctions, such as a brilliant tourmaline or spinel, together with an official gemmological report!

Till Rosenkranz

Auctioneer Classic cars

With classic cars you experience what it’s really like to drive a car.

  • Regularly drives in (classic car) races
  • 20 years' experience
  • Always worked in the automotive industry
  • Was also a car dealer
Till Rosenkranz

Till Rosenkranz took apart his first Vespa scooter at the age of 14. At the age of 18, he was hugely proud of his newly purchased Fiat 124 Spider, which had to be completely restored. He spent a lot of his free time making it as good as new. Later, he worked at Mercedes Benz (Daimler AG) and then at BMW as a sales manager. He also regularly participated in car races. As a result, Till learned about all aspects of the auto world. It was only a matter of time before he became a car dealer.

Till sees the market for classic cars growing, with more and more young people getting involved. He notices that they want to experience what it actually feels like to drive a car, and want to know how everything works. Catawiki offers an ever increasing number of classic cars, and Till knows precisely what to look for. Of course, the condition is important and whether the car still drives well. He also checks carefully whether the car has been restored and whether the job has been done properly.

Auctioneer Books

I like to help my sellers present their books in the best possible light.

  • Worked for 13 years at an antiquarian bookshop
  • Studied History
  • Was a manager of a large online book catalogue

Exceptional lots

Tom Hopman

Books have always fascinated Tom Hopman. He read a lot and worked part time at the local library during his studies. After studying history and philosophy, with plenty of required reading, he wanted to continue working with books. De Slegte bookshop offered the solution: Tom worked there happily for 13 years as supervisor of the antiquarian section. Every day was spent buying and selling, carrying out appraisals and writing descriptions for the online catalogue.

Tom thinks that in many ways working as an auctioneer is similar to his old job. He is still surprised every day by the books he comes across, this time via his internet connection. His appraisal and trading insights are constantly put to good use. Tom likes to maintain good relationships with his sellers in order to get the description and presentation just right for the auction - and, of course, to get a good price. He is never happier than when it all comes together, with a good auction as the end result.

The way supply and demand come together at Catawiki is fascinating.

  • Previously appraised archaeological objects for an auction house in The Hague
  • Studied Egyptology
  • Has a broad archaeological interest

Willem Knapen

When an important Roman excavation takes place in your aunt’s cellar, it makes sense to take an interest in archaeology. That is precisely what happened to Willem Knapen. As a child, he followed the excavation closely and saw a lot of coins and other objects pass by. He soon started going to all the coin and archaeological fairs and auctions in order to build up his own collection. After spending years studying Egyptology and doing volunteer work at the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (National Museum of Antiquities), Willem worked as an auction employee at an auction house in The Hague. He started out as a jack of all trades, but he increasingly helped with the description and assessment of objects.

So Willem landed in the auction world, and Catawiki is now lucky to be his current employer. His experience and knowledge of coins are crucial in his current role as the Antique Coins auctioneer, both to weed out forgeries and to put together as varied an auction as possible, preferably ranging from affordable late Roman coins to more precious early Greek drachmas and staters. His personal preference is for early Greek coins, such as those from Aegina, Syracuse and Bruttium, which are usually small works of art in and of themselves. Willem is happy to include them in his auction if they are still in excellent condition.

Wim van Stormbroek

Auctioneer Archaeological Finds & Remains / Natural History

I think it’s important that the items on offer are high quality.

  • Worked as an appraiser
  • Owned his own artefacts gallery
  • Over 30 years' experience

Exceptional lots

Wim van Stormbroek

Wim van Stormbroek regularly found arrowheads and flints as a small boy. It’s what happens when you live on the site of an ancient Stone Age settlement. Mesmerised, he would watch excavations and it didn’t take long for him to have a go himself. He conducted several excavations, where he dug up his own artefacts. Once he set up his own artefacts gallery, he handled many more discoveries; from a Roman chair to a simple fibula. In addition to his gallery, Wim also appraised professional archaeological finds in the art and antiques TV programme Schatgraven. During twenty years in this role, Wim saw and sold thousands of pieces, giving him vast expertise in the field and an invaluable network.

Wim now uses his expertise for Catawiki. Everything shows up at his archaeological and artefacts auction; from Neolithic flints to Egyptian sarcophagus masks. He believes it is important that the listed items are authentic. His experience as a dealer and appraiser come in handy here. He can often tell within a few seconds whether an object is interesting enough for his auction.

Putting together a beautiful auction is a sport in itself!

  • Once set up his own Panini scrapbook
  • Follows almost all sports
  • Former Dutch mini tennis champion

Exceptional lots

Wouter Waaijers

Wouter Waaijers describes himself as a true sports fanatic. He has been involved in sport his entire life, both as an active participant and as a passive onlooker. He watches football, athletics, darts and tennis and played, amongst others, (indoor) football, tennis, swimming and mini tennis. He was even a Dutch champion of mini tennis. It goes without saying that Wouter continues his passion for sport by auctioning sport memorabilia and Panini. He once even set up his own Panini scrapbook, which was a big success.

Wouter throws all his enthusiasm for sport into his auctioneering. Autographed items like shirts, photos and balls are especially popular. They make fantastic birthday gifts or collectibles. Personally, Wouter really enjoys Panini sticker books. The European Championship album from ‘88 is always exciting to see, because it could contain either one of the two versions of footballer Sjaak Troost. He takes the utmost care when compiling his auctions to give sport its due, which Wouter believes is a sport in itself. No wonder he enjoys it so much!

  • Critical vision with an eye for professionalism
  • Worked for various auction houses

Zsuzsa Vermesi

With her tremendous enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge, Zsuzsa Vermesi began working towards becoming an auctioneer shortly after finishing her studies. Zsuzsa has already earned her reputation in the art world. With a Master’s in art history, internships with the Arts & Antiques Group (AAG) auction house and managing the collection of an international bank, she knows what she is talking about.

Auctioneering fits her like a glove. In addition to established names like Shepard Fairey and Zhang Xiaogang, she also likes to give lesser known talents a chance. Of course, not without first carrying out the necessary research and casting a critical eye over the work. This ensures she always upholds the auction’s high level of quality.

As an auctioneer, Zsuzsa learned how important it is to establish good relationships with sellers. Catawiki’s online focus is a big advantage because she can act quickly and communicate easily. This allows Zsuzsa to link with a growing number of artists and suppliers in order to put together a high quality and surprising auction every week.
