Art lets you see aspects of a culture you wouldn’t otherwise get to know.
When her globetrotting parents moved to Nepal to run a hotel, eight-year-old Surya Rutten went with them. There she learned all about the culture, which has always fascinated her. Back in the Netherlands, she helped with her father’s art trade. His business focused on high-end Asian and African art. Her choice of studies was motivated by her interest in Asian art and culture, but the family business also beckoned. Surya soon played a vital role in her father’s company, which she eventually took over. She has acquired a vast knowledge of Asian art, having attended many annual fairs and dealt with thousands of items.
Surya is someone who likes to keep busy, so Catawiki is the perfect match for her. With hundreds of the most diverse lots every week, she can study, search and acquire knowledge to her heart’s content. Thanks to her vast experience, Surya can fully assess the lots on offer based on photographs. She also enjoys the contact she has with the sellers. With their common interest, she feels putting together a good auction is a fantastic shared challenge.
