To accurately date a bottle, I can draw from my many years of research.
Emile Smits got a taste for whisky during his early teens, not only because he was one of the cool kids, but it secretly also triggered his fascination for history. His interest increased when he tasted the difference between modern and old spirits. Since Emile Smits always wants to know everything in fine detail, he did some research into the production process and its development. Consequently, he built a database of many gigabytes with photos of old labels, advertisements and hundreds of pages of notes. In the meantime he gladly demonstrated his knowledge in the renowned L&B whisky cafe in Amsterdam, where thousands of bottles crossed his path.
For Catawiki Emile Smits especially focuses on older bottles within the whisky, cognac, armagnac and liqueur auctions. Using his vast database he is able to date the bottles with precision. Due to his work experience in the whisky cafe and at tastings, Emile Smits knows which bottles will do well in auctions. When composing his auctions he takes this into account and makes sure that his lots are well taken care of, so you know exactly what you're bidding on.
