Many enthusiasts have one classic race car to race with and one to admire.
For an instant it seemed like Jan-Bart Broertjes would follow in his father’s footsteps as an airplane enthusiast. That is, until he discovered the former F1 race track in Zandvoort (The Netherlands). The cars speeding past across the tarmac instantly fascinated him and after watching them for years, he became a track official when he was only fifteen years old. Later, as head timekeeper, he became closely involved in the innovations in that field. This way, Jan-Bart Broertjes has literally watched thousands of cars from up close, and it was the classic race cars especially that started to captivate him more and more. His own garage hosts, amongst others, a Caterham Seven and he possesses an extensive literature collection.
The latter often comes in handy in his work as an auctioneer. In appraising cars, but also the large quantity of memorabilia, such as badges, enamel signs and of course Michelin figures. If unique cars are offered up for auction, Jan-Bart Broertjes will dive into their past with all that he’s got: Where did the car race? Who drove it? And importantly: does the car still drive? That practical side is something he never loses track of, especially due to the fact that classic race cars are not meant to decorate your garage, they need to be driven!
