Posters are a unique combination of culture and commerce.
Arjan den Boers’ interest in posters came about from his lifelong love for trains. More than ten years ago, he found his first poster in an auction for train parts. The poster, from 1880 by artist Jules Cheret, was a match made in heaven and formed the foundation of his new passion. From that moment onwards, Arjan den Boer visited many auctions for more posters, to assemble a respectable collection. Consequently, he has thoroughly studied the market, after which he started to write articles about posters for a Dutch and an American magazine and started to teach a course on poster art at the Vrije Academie.
Working for Catawiki was the next logical step for Arjan den Boer. As an auctioneer he stumbles upon posters from the entire 20th and late 19th century. Especially French ones, which advertise the Moulin Rouge, cabaret or the Orient Express but also younger posters about products such as cars, tobacco or liquor. Arjan den Boer prefers including the original posters in his auctions, but he often also saves some room for lithographical reprints. Primarily reprints by the French designer Cassandre are highly sought after in his carefully assembled auctions.
