Helping someone with a good sale is the best feeling you can get as an expert.
John Laurence’s interest in ceramics came about because of his parents. They used to do up old furniture from the UK and sell it in The Netherlands. John provided tableware for presentation, which often sold faster than the furniture itself. This got John interested in ceramics, hunting down nice pieces wherever he could. Eventually, he started his own shop in Amsterdam, selling mainly Dutch ceramics. He also did some good business online as one of the first online sellers of ceramics. That got him a huge international network of buyers, sellers and ceramic enthusiasts. With Catawiki, John takes his expertise to the next level. Despite his vast knowledge, he still sees unfamiliar pieces on a daily basis. He especially enjoys figuring out what the marks are that grace the bottom of most ceramics, detailing everything about their origins, dates and manufacturers… If you know what to look for! There are thousands of them, all neatly arranged in John’s mental library. John loves to identify exceptional pieces, especially when the seller isn’t aware of it. That way he can help them make a great sale and in doing so, spread his enthusiasm for ceramics and antiques.
