I used to make my own jewellery as an amateur jeweller.
Precious gems have always held an irresistible attraction for Iris Hendriks. She used to extract them from rocks herself using a hammer and chisel. As an amateur jeweller, she also made her own jewellery for years. As a trader, she saw all sorts of curios about which she always wanted to know the details. She has seen or traded just about everything that has precious gems on it.
Designer jewellery, gold necklaces and grandmother’s old brooches: according to Hendriks, anything that could be called jewellery is put up for the Catawiki jewellery auction. In Hendriks’ experience, on closer inspection Bvlgari jewellery in particular sometimes turns out to actually be from a Chinese factory. Iris knows better than most what markings and hidden features to look for. Using her experience, she usually sees quickly if it is from a factory or hand-made.
