Around 1958/1959 N.V. Smeets & Schippers took a license from Waddington to publish the Cluedo game in the Netherlands. The basis was the similar English red box from that period. The Cluedo set was first mentioned in the lids of the 1959 Monopoly boxes, along with the Carriere set that was also introduced at the time. The same 3 advertisements appear in the lid of this Cluedo box. This very first version of the Dutch red box from 1959 had cardboard inserts without print, just like the corresponding Monopoly boxes. In the same year, the use of the overprint on the filling pieces must have started, with the Cluedo overprints showing the various murder weapons (see the other copy from 1959). These prints were mistakenly also used in some Monopoly boxes from 1967/68 (see type Z16 at http://vlinden.com/monopoly for an example).
