Details

This game is based on the very popular radio game "Brain Gymnastics" which was broadcast by the AVRO from 1938 to 1992, with an interruption during the Second World War. It is considered the oldest regular quiz program in the world. The score was kept in the post-war years by announcer Mieke Melcher. The question "How is the score, Mieke?" became a winged word. The board game was released in 1940 and was for sale for f3.50. The content consisted of a booklet with the rules and 800 questions by G. de Josselin de Jong, 6 cardboard pawns that had to be put together, two sets of 20 cards (EXAM and BEHAVIOR), two dice and a game board with a picture on it. school class full of benches and a blackboard. Afterwards, 3 follow-up booklets were available with additional questions. The game pictured comes with the first accompanying booklet and the first sequel booklet (second series). Only very few copies of this edition have been preserved, especially in combination with one or more booklets. G. de Josselin de Jong, who had compiled the questions, was brought before the Gooische war tribunal in November 1946 and accused of having been a member of the NSB and of having contributed to the dissemination of war propaganda in his position as chief of the Dutch Broadcaster. Two different copies of the second book are known, one with mention of the wartime author Josselin de Jong and knowledge number K744, and one without that mention in which the newspapers Het Parool and Trouw appear in one of the questions. were prohibited. This shows that the author was censored in the post-war edition. The two editions of the booklets are shown in the third photo (info Gerard Stoer). The game also comes with the wartime kennel number K744, which indicates that it was also produced after July 1941 by R.Borst printing company in Deventer.
