Details
Box (228x148x95mm mm) is of German origin. Made of cardboard covered with gray textured paper that looks a lot like bookbinders linen. The outside of the attached lid features the Pung Chow (sparrow with tile) logo printed in faded gold. The same logo plus a Perry sticker appears on the inside of the lid. Behind the flap-front there are 4 trays for the tiles and 4 small ones for counters etc. The interior is covered with orange paper. The sides of the trays are covered with the same material as on the outside. Instead of buttons they have little orange knots of rope. Tiles (22x32x11mm) are Western/German. Made of blank wood printed in single colors with freely interpreted characters and images. The Bamboos are remarkable. Dots 1 displays the Pung Chow lettering. The German O (= Ostwind) has been used instead of the English E of East wind. The seasons are numbered from 1 to 4 and show twice the same plants. One series in green and one in red. There are four spare tiles. Counters are thin strips of celluloid in black, green, red and white. Dice (2x) are made of bone with Western points. Wind indicators are identical to the playing tiles. But with very large initials. The German O (= Ostwind) has been used instead of the English E of East wind. Instruction manual is a German Pung Chow booklet, copyright June 1922. Of later date (and obviously added) is a booklet published by Perry, 8th printing, January 1937. There are also a score card and a card with abbreviated rules. * Between 1920 and 1930 Germany imported only a few Mah Jongg sets from China.
