Willem Jan Cornelis Buitendijk E.K. Grootes The Company recently received a bequest of NLG 6,000 from the estate of Mrs. D. Buitendijk-Mulder, widow of Dr. W.J.C. Outside the dike. The board, bearing in mind the work area of Dr. W.J.C. Buitendijk decided to add this bequest to the Kruyskamp Fund. Willem Jan Cornelis Buitendijk (1906-1981) was one of the now rare Dutch scholars who were able to combine a full teaching job with considerable publicist activity. His appointment as a member of the Society was a mark of recognition of his scientific achievements, especially in the field of Renaissance literature. His life story, by W.A. Orneé, appeared in the Yearbook 1981-1982. Buitendijk, from a well-reformed nest, graduated cum laude from the Free University in 1932. His 1942 dissertation, Calvinism in the Mirror of the Southern Dutch literature of the Counter-Reformation, hailed by Karsemeijer as 'highly important' after publication, is still an indispensable source of information about the relations between the literature of North and South in the seventeenth century. Striking for that time is his balanced judgment on the fierce opponents of Calvinism, such as Richard Verstegen. It can be called characteristic of his independent mind. However much his work is based on a strong conviction of his own, he did not shy away from criticizing prevailing views in his own circle. For example, he contested the notion that members of the PvdA should not be appointed to Christian schools and he went into detail about the work of Anna Blaman, which is detested in his environment. His review of The Evenings, in which horror mixes with a touch of admiration, especially shows the educationalist's concern about the uprooting of post-war youth. Buitendijk contributed good anthologies from the work of De Decker, Revius and Da Costa to literature education. His Dutch Battle Songs is still the most used introduction to the geuzen song. His scientific work was crowned in the beautiful edition of Jan Vos' complete Toneelwerken from 1975. pp: 369 pp., personal register
