Details

Jules de Corte (Deurne, March 29, 1924 - Eindhoven, February 16, 1996) was a Dutch songwriter, composer, pianist and singer. Jules de Corte became known as a singer-poet-pianist with songs such as De Vogels, I would like to know and If you're old the day after tomorrow. Jules de Corte was born in Deurne as the fifth child in a family with socialist ideals. He came from a family of Belgian immigrants; the name Jules is still very common in the De Corte family. At the age of one, he became blind due to a medical error. In organ and piano lessons at the institute for the blind he turned out to have so much talent for music that he was able to make it his profession. He wrote hundreds of songs for KRO radio, among others, and performed his recital program in all possible theaters for many years. De Corte died at the age of 71. He was married twice; his six children were born from his first marriage. His widow, Thea de Corte-Dekker, pursued a listening museum in De Corte's hometown Helenaveen for a number of years, which ultimately did not materialize. She now manages the estate from which unreleased recordings are occasionally published on CD or DVD. A box with historical radio recordings is being prepared in collaboration with Sound & Vision (Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision) in Hilversum. In connection with this, Paul Versteegen and Cees van der Pluijm are working on a documentary about the life and work of Jules de Corte. De Corte was awarded the Visser Neerlandia Prize, the Louis Davids Prize, the Golden Harp and the Edison. He was a member of the Society of Dutch Literature. On 11 March 2008, Jules de Corte was posthumously awarded the Oeuvre Prize from the municipality of Helmond. On the occasion of this award, on October 21, 2008, on the corner of the Zuid-Koninginnewal and the Lambertushof, alderman Cees Bethlehem and writer and De-Cortebiographer Cees van der Pluijm unveiled a plaque with the text of the song 'The Words'. Internationally, De Corte's work has been performed by Bruce Low and Rudi Carrell (German), Alice Babs (Swedish), Philippe Elan (French), Jannie du Toit and Coenie de Villiers (South African) and James Last (instrumental). . In 2005 the collected lyrics of Jules de Corte appeared in the Pluche series: I would like to know, compiled, introduced and explained by Cees van der Pluijm (with a complete disco and bibliography). Theater maker Guus de Klein from Nijmegen is working with Cees van der Pluijm on a music theater performance in which the life and works of Jules de Corte play a role.
