Van der Wolk, former director of the Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh is the author of this first full edition of Vincent's seven "pocket-sized sketchbooks". After two introductory chapters, resp. about the sketcher Van Gogh and about the criteria for a reconstruction of the no longer completely intact seven pieces, in chapter 3 he gives the reconstruction and life-size depiction of all the sheets from those sketchbooks, which start in Nuenen and in Auver-sur Oise end. The fourth chapter poses a series of questions regarding the relationship between sketchbook drawings and finished works from Vincent's oeuvre. In the present study, the author has added some 150 "new" drawings and notes about Van Gogh's public oeuvre. A minimum of (very technical) text and a maximum of viewing pleasure. Very neat edition with mainly black and white images.
