Original editorial cartoon on board in pen and ink, published in the London Evening News, 1937, as one of the ‘London Laughs’ series, shows two passers-by watching an American at his club peering upwards at the sky. One says to the other: ‘he’s not the same man now he knows his wife can get here in twelve hours by air’. The advances in civil aviation in the decades after the Great War meant dramatically shorter journeys across for instance the Atlantic, a development which this particular American does not seem to welcome. Board size 53 x 38 cm (21 x 15 inch), image size 40 x 28 cm, signed lower centre, typed caption pasted on in lower border and dated 27-9-37, numbered 1020, corner edges broken away and some staining along borders, otherwise in good condition
