Original editorial cartoon on board in pen and ink, published in the London Evening News, 1939, as one of the ‘London Laughs’ series, shows two Chelsea pensioners, or army veterans: ‘Well, that’s agreed then. We both get our beards off and try the Air Force’. In mid-March 1939 Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia in violation of the agreements made with France and Britain at Munich six months before, resulting in a greatly increased threat of war. Board size 49 x 34 cm (19 x 13.5 inch), image size 36 x 24 cm, signed lower right, caption in ink in lower border and dated 23-3-39, numbered 1457, slight loss to board at top corners but otherwise in very good condition.
