Original editorial cartoon on board in pen and ink, published in the London Evening News, 1936, as one of the ‘London Laughs’ series, shows a couple leaving a cabaret show while the woman says to her husband ‘You may take that serviette off now, Henry!, much to the amusement of the other members of the audience. An older generation brought up in the prudish Victorian era was offended and dismayed by the more liberated behaviour of young people, and young women in particular, during the twenties and thirties. The dancing girls with their revealing costumes are evidently too much for this old battleaxe. Board size 53 x 38 cm (21 x 15 inch), image size 47 x 35 cm, signed lower right, caption pasted on in lower border, dated 8-6-36, numbered 618. Slight board loss at lower corners, otherwise in good condition. Also present is a copy of the page with the published cartoon from the Evening News of Monday 8 June 1936.
