Original editorial cartoon on board in pen and ink, published in the London Evening News, 1940, as one of the World War Two ‘Smiling Through’ series, shows a man on a railway platform smoking a pipe and offering some of whatever he is smoking to a man standing next to him: ‘Try a pipeful of this, old chap. I grow it myself’. Judging from the reactions of this ‘chap’ and the other people on the platform, this substance is rather unpleasant. Despite the fact that tobacco was the largest import into Britain during WW2, there were still severe shortages (most of it went to the troops) and people experimented with herb tobacco, not always with good results. Board size 53 x 38 cm (21 x 15 inch), image size 35 x 30 cm, signed lower left, caption pasted on in lower border, dated 1-7-40, numbered 1816. Some board loss along edges, otherwise in good condition.
