Original cartoon on card in pencil and watercolour, 1918, no indication of where and if it was published, shows Kaiser Wilhelm on his ‘last throne’, which is a gallows, wearing a jester’s hat and holding a death’s head, surveying the many dead German soldiers below. Following Germany’s defeat in WWI the Kaiser managed to escape the gallows, abdicating and retiring to neutral Holland, which denied all attempts to have him extradited. Lafnet was a Belgian comic strip illustrator and also produced more risqué work under various pseudonyms, including ‘Jack Black’. Card size 54 x 41 cm, image size 42 x 32 cm, signed and dated lower right, caption in lower border. Some wrinkling of the card, otherwise in good condition.
