"One warm August evening in 1957 at Music Inn, located near Lenox, Massachusetts, in the beautiful Berkshires, the great gospel singer Mahalia Jackson was bringing to a close one of the most moving concerts I have ever experienced. We (the MJQ) were in residence, along with the Oscar Peterson trio, among others, as instructors at the School of Jazz at Lenox. Ray Brown', the famous bassist of the Peterson trio, was inspired by Miss Jackson's singing to write a piece which we now call Pyramid. The piece has strong gospel and blues echoes to it. The title came from an experimental arrangement of the piece in which the idea was to make a kind of tempo pyramid: from slow to fast back to slow. Changed from its original format somewhat, in this version it still reflects the rising and falling feeling of the pyramid." - John Lewis
