During the War of 1812, Oliver Hazard Perry supervised the building of a fleet at Erie, PA. He became known as the “hero of Lake Erie”
for leading forces in a victory at
the Battle of Lake Erie. He is remembered for two quotes:
- “Don't give up the ship” and
- “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”
