The Neo-Geo AES (Advanced Entertainment System) was the home version of SNK’s coin-op arcade hall Neo-Geo MVS (Multi Video System). It was originally targeted for commercial use in hotels, restaurants, etc. but it soon became popular and was also sold as a home video computer. The Neo-Geo AES was at the time being the most advanced home video console and it was capable of playing the games with the same quality as its arcade hall counterpart. The main drawback was its price tag of about $600. Also the game cartridges (which where huge in size) were extremely expensive. It also had a huge game controller with incorporated joystick. The game catalog contained mainly fighting games (King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown,…). The limited catalog and the high price made it a niche product, but also a cult object. Later on a less expensive CD-rom based system was released. The AES cartridges are different from the MVS cartridges. The game rom content is the same, but the pin connections are different. MVS cassettes can only be played on an AES system with a convertor. Neo-Geo AES games are basically region free, but the game consoles not. There only exist Japanese and USA versions (both NTSC), so to play on a PAL TV, you will need a NTSC/PAL convertor. The USA console will always give English screen text and the Japanese version only Japanese text.
