Item Description:
A creative wooden kokeshi by first-generation Usaburo Okamoto, designed as a two-piece container. The rounded head section serves as the lid, while the cylindrical body opens as a small storage compartment.
The dark polished surface is decorated with carved and burned details, showing red and natural-wood flowers with leaves across the front and body. The calm facial expression, rounded form, deep wood tone, and carved floral decoration strongly reflect the style associated with Usaburo’s modern kokeshi work.
The artist’s signature is visible on the side. The work title is unknown.
There are age-related scratches, scuffs, small chips, and wear, including visible wear around the rim and surface. Please check the photos for the detailed condition.
Artist:
Okamoto Usaburo, first generation Usaburo (1917-2009), was a modern creative kokeshi artist from Gunma Prefecture. He began making kokeshi in 1950 and later founded Usaburo Kokeshi studio in 1979.
He is known for establishing a distinctive three-dimensional style using carving and pyrography, and for actively using woods such as zelkova and chestnut. He received many awards, including the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award, the Director-General of the Forestry Agency Award, and other major prizes in modern kokeshi competitions.
