DESCRIPTION:

Set of two round boxes in solid silver carved with a beautiful floral and zoomorphic decoration of a beautiful quality that was once used to contain lime (lime) intended for the manufacture of betel chiques . These two boxes are special because of the geometric decoration at the back. I had never seen anything like it.

Marvellous craftsmanship, more complex than it seems, because it was entirely handmade with rudimentary tools.

Circa mid-20th century, Burma.

The largest is 4.8 cms tall and 7.2 cms in diameter and weighs 58 grams. Decorated with flowers and birds.

The second is 2.7 cms tall and 5.2 cms in diameter and weighs 34 grams. Its lid is decorated with a cynth, mythical Burmese lion while the body of the box has a floral decoration.

TRAVEL DIARY OF JEAN DUMOULIN

Traditionally, these boxes contained lime, which, when mixed with areca nut, spices or tobacco, was used to make betel quid.

This was a common practice in many countries in southeastern Asia and is still very present, especially in Burma. This causes a light euphoric feeling to the consumers. From experience, after a serious discussion with a betel quid consumer, it is better to schedule a talk in the morning, rather than at the end of the day, as attention and understanding may be minimal.

In addition, this practice damages the user’s teeth and gums, giving them an inimitable red smile.

It comes from my personal collection.
