Historical Note:
Ardashir I was the founder of the Sasanian Empire, ascending to power after defeating the last Parthian ruler, Artabanus IV, at the Battle of Hormozdgan in AD 224. Proclaiming himself "King of Kings of Iran," he established a new imperial dynasty rooted in Zoroastrian tradition and centralized governance. His reign marked the end of Arsacid (Parthian) rule and laid the foundation for a revitalized Persian empire that would endure for over four centuries and emerge as a major rival to Rome. Early coinage like this tetradrachm reflects a transitional artistic style, blending Parthian elements with the emerging Sasanian identity.
