ABOUT THE ARTIST
Juan Barjola (1919–2004) was a Spanish painter and key figure in postwar expressionism. Born in Torre de Miguel Sesmero, he studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville. His early work was figurative, but he soon developed a powerful expressionist style characterized by distorted human figures, dramatic compositions, and intense emotional content.
Barjola’s paintings often explore themes of violence, fear, and the human condition, reflecting the tensions of 20th-century Spain. His bold use of color and gestural brushwork placed him among the leading figures of Spanish informalism and figurative expressionism.
Among his major achievements are numerous national awards, including the National Prize for Plastic Arts, and extensive exhibitions in Spain and abroad. Today, his legacy is preserved in the Museo Barjola in Gijón.
