ITEM: Complete Japanese Armor (Gusoku) — Mid-Edo Period Certified: Tokubetsu Kichō Shiryō · Nihon Katchū Bugu Kenkyū Hozon Kai · No. 223 (2024) An imposing samurai armor (gusoku) of the mid-Edo period (18th century), commanding in presence and superb for display, built around a lacquered-iron cuirass certified by Japan's leading armor authority. The cuirass (dō). The heart of the piece is an okegawa nimai-dō of black-lacquered iron: a two-part hinged body formed of riveted horizontal iron lames, finished smooth in deep, glossy black lacquer. It is laced in fine, close-set kebiki cord in navy blue, shading to light green-yellow (moegi) across the waist — the refined aesthetic device known as koshitori. The upper breastplate and shoulder straps are faced in stencilled decorative leather (egawa), and the back bears the characteristic agemaki bow. It is this cuirass that the Nihon Katchū Bugu Kenkyū Hozon Kai (The Association for the Research and Preservation of Japanese Helmets and Armor) has certified at the grade of Tokubetsu Kichō Shiryō (certificate No. 223, June 2024, signed by chairman Nagata Hitoshi). The ensemble is crowned by a russet-iron kabuto with a peaked bowl and a flared neck-guard (shikoro) of lacquered lames, mounted with a crescent-moon front crest (maedate) and a great pair of black-lacquered buffalo-horn side crests (ōsuigyū wakidate) that give it a striking silhouette.
