I went to visit a Chateau very recently near Bourges in le Chers through a very good contact. Charming owners, who decided to dispose of most of their linen amongst some superb early 20th C. kitchen towels etc.
In all the years of my passion of old linen I have never come across these beautiful linen tea towels.
The initials P.P. are in English script and beautifully embroidered with a small red cross stitch. And in the centre is a small star which makes such a beautiful finish. There are 2 generous vertical red stripes to compliment the towel. The lady told me that they have been in the armoires for at least 75 years and she cannot recall they were ever used. The chateau has belonged to the family since the 17th Century.
They have all been washed prior to soaking them in soda.
Please study the photos carefully.
