Very detailed engravings.

The engraved plates are engraved after Rubens and Raphael.
The plates from this first edition, are remarkable due to the quality of the plates. The first edition of Cowper's dealings with the musculature of the human body was published in 1694 as a modest octavo with 10 plates. Cowper worked until his death on this greatly expanded edition, which appeared 13 years later under supervision and at the expense of the physician Richard Mead (1673-1754). These prints were among the most artistically inventive and anatomical atlases of the 17th and 18th centuries.
