Praecipua aliquot Romanae Antiquitatis Ruinarum Monimenta ...

Interior view of the Colosseum in Rome, Etching
Signed lower left 'Colossaei Ro Prospectus / BRVF 1561'

Print made by: Battista Pittoni (1520-1583)
After: Hieronymus Cock (1517-1570)

Preceded only ten years by the famous series by Hieronymous Cock.
His prints showing Roman ruins were used in the treatise by Vincenzo Scamozzi 'Discorsi sopra le antichità di Roma' (Venice, 1582) based on Hieronymus Cock's series first published in 1551 (see Hollstein 22-47). Most of Pittoni's prints do not exactly replicate Cock's prints but are very close and clearly based on his.

For comment on Cock's series see Peter Fuhring, in J. van Grieken - G. Luijten - J. van der Stock, "Hieronymus Cock: The Renaissance in Print", exh.cat. Royal Library of Belgium in Brussels and Fondation Custodia in Paris, New Haven and London, 2013, cat.no.9.

215 x 310 mm
Good impression on watermarked laid paper with full plate border and wide margins.
Vertical middle fold. Italian text printed on the backside at left.
