Mat and frame damaged. Maarten Antonie van Dreven, born 12 July 1941 to Sneek, died on 7 February 2001 in The Hague. Studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the Hague, a.o. with Co Westerik. Together with the young artists, whom he met through the Academy, Pat Andrea, Peter Blokhuis, Walter Nobbe and Jurjen de Haan he is classified as the Hague "New Realists".
Maarten van Dreven and his friend Jurjen de Haan were the representatives of the photo realism (hyper realism). Jurjen de Haan evoked an imaginative, brash world with his colourful portraits, motorcyclists and poetic associations, in which the bright Cobra colours met the The Hague grey colour scheme. He worked, just like Jurjen de Haan, preferably in large format, with as subject stilled masks and body protectors, worked out in extremely careful drawings. His background as a fashion designer is clearly identifiable.
