Martin Mager von Schönberg (1583-1625), lawyer and councillor at the court of Kaiser Leopold, published this large monograph in the year of his death. It is the first major presentation of an important profession. The work itself is divided into 18 chapters, beginning with an examination of the usefulness and necessity of a functioning lawyer. After specifying the clientele and lawyer, an attempt is made to determine what constitutes a lawyer (Chapter 4). This is followed by a historical outline of the development of the lawyer in the process of common law, but also among the lawyers in ancient Rome, where they held a special position and recognition. All in all, this is still an unexplored source about a profession that is rarely the focus of legal historical research.
