Oil on panel depicting one moment of the anti Semitic episod known as “Damascus affair”. In the scene Consul of France in Siria Ulysses de Ratti menton is begged to free one of member of the Jewish community accused for the ritual murder of the Italian priest and his servant.
On February 5, 1840, the Capuchin friar Thomas, disappeared together with his Muslim servant Ibrahim ʿAmāra. The Capuchins immediately circulated the news that the Jews had murdered both men in order to use their blood for Passover.
The painting was gifted from consul’s widow to his cousin Count René de Beuc at the occasion of death in 1891.
Historic painting signed and dated from the collection of the ratti family and passed from the heritage of Piergentile Varano.
