In the last ten years his reputation has been solidified and major canvases achieve upwards of half a million at auction. Ramos was also one of the first American artists to appropriate images from comic books. His works were included in the seminal show at LACMA in 1963 alongside Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
In the 1970's Ramos began several series of works that paid homage to his inspirations, including Old Master Paintings, Modigliani and Willem de Kooning.
This reverence for the past was at odds with the irony and "too cool for school" mentality of the era's Pop artists. Willem de Kooning in particular was arguably the antithesis of Pop Art. His works, with their complexity and levels of paint, and consistent ambivalence towards the female form seem opposite to Ramos' approach and aesthetic. Nevertheless, Ramos is confidently honoring de Kooning in his series "I Get a Thrill When I See Bill" which merges the senior artist's gestural expressionism with the immediate contemporary image of Ramos' signature sweetheart.
