Loret / Longueville, Duchesse de Nemours - La Muze historique Ou Recueil des Lettres en vers - 1857
Psychologie, Soziologie, Wissenschaft (allgemein) - Anzahl: 5 - Buch

Very good copy, extremely rare complete in 4 volumes and the volume of the table published between 1857-1891.

New edition revised on the manuscripts and first editions and expanded with an introduction, notes and a general table of contents. Complete with the booklet published by Champion in 1891 containing a table of the names mentioned (58 pp. here in facsimile). The second part of volume IV of the Muse de Loret which was to contain the critical apparatus never appeared.

La Muse Historique originated with the Fronde, but did not proceed directly from it, and distinguished itself from the multitude of Mazarinades by a character of its own: burlesque gazette and in verse, as it suited the time, but which was nevertheless the father of these Parisian chronicles which have since been so worn out and abused.

“Mais sache, lecteur débonnaire,
Encor que des mains du rimeur
Cette gazette épistolaire
Passe en celles de l’imprimeur,
Qu’elle n’en est pas plus commune,
Car, sans abus ni fraude aucune,
Il doit observer cette loi,
De n’en tirer chaque semaine
Qu’une unique et seule douzaine,
Tant pour mes amis que pour moi ;
Après cela point de copie,
En dût-on avoir la pépie.”

It was in 1650, from 12 May, that Loret began to write his Lettres in verse, which he addressed to his benefactor the Princess of Longueville on Saturday or Sunday, and that he continued until the beginning of 1665 with a regularity that was never interrupted.

But the Princess de Longueville was not exclusive: she could only have been flattered by the success of her protégé, and it was only natural that she should be interested in spreading these papers that, according to the words of a witty figure of the time, de Colletet, would fly farther than the wings of Fame, going, each week, to carry her praises to the ends of Europe.

And then Loret’s letters were too much to the taste of this stirring and frantic period for them to remain for a long time the privilege of the somewhat circumscribed circle of Mademoiselle de Longueville. Soon the streets were filled with nothing but the poet journalist’s words, and the most salient features flew from mouth to mouth in every corner of the city.

A collection in which are recorded all the remarkable facts, political and literary, all the happenings of the city and the court, for a period of fifteen years, filled with events of every kind, a gazette that had the singular privilege of entertaining for so long the most polite and enlightened society, cannot fail to have great historical importance" (E. Hatinin Hatin, in "Histoire politique et littéraire de la presse en France", 1859). ‎
