Provenance: Private collection, France
It was not an easy process to perform the art of caricature in the 1830’s and 40’s in France. First authorized by Louis-Philippe after his accession to throne in July 1830, the genre was quickly muzzled by the new power, certainly irritated by fierce caricatures targeting the establishment and its rules. Nevertheless Edmé-Jean Pigal expressed from the 1830’s a strong interest for lithographs mocking the bourgeoisie’s hypocrisy and the vulgarity of the lower classes . His works depict everyday life scenes, observed with humour and presenting commonplace characters. Despite his impertinence, Pigal was one of the few painters allowed to exhibit caricatures during the official salons.
