Nineteenth-century painting depicting Duke George II of Saxony, who was a reformer of his state and a remarkable politician of his time. He became known, in particular, as a promoter of the theatrical arts, director, set designer and patron of music, so much so that he earned the nickname ‘Duke of the Theatre’. With his first and beloved wife, Charlotte of Prussia, he also lived in the beautiful villa on Lake Como that still bears the princess’ name. This high-quality painting shows the Duke at a mature age, wearing a blue suit with a fur collar. Please note, as shown in photos, the parts of textured painting in the hair and beard, and the features of his face and eyes, which show the painter’s skill, who was certainly a well-known portraitist of the time. Painting size: 99x85.5 cm with beautiful and antique boxed frame, 70x60 cm canvas only. It comes with certificate of lawful origin from my collection.
