Antique oil on canvas from the 17th century, depicting an evocative Magdalene.
The painting has unique characteristics, attributable to an author of the Bolognese school, in which the quality of the painting and drawing are evident and worth noting; the work has an elegant compositional balance, chromatic and lighting sensibility, dictated by Reni’s models, suggesting the attribution to an artist among the pupils or followers of the master who passed through his house-workshop in via Pescherie.
Many were in fact the young painters who aspired to be considered his pupils, actively participating in the life of his various "rooms" or coming by sporadically to catch some inspiration from his work in progress. Among the most important and concretely active on the paintings commissioned to Reni are Albani, Lanfranco, Gessi, Sementi, Sirani and Cantarini.
In a beautiful antique frame, gilded and decorated with leaf motifs, with some flaws and defects.
In overall fairly good condition, considering its age. There are some scattered restorations and some peeling of the surface, but nothing truly relevant. There are no conservation issues and the original canvas is supported by an old re-lining that does not seem to require restoration. It looks like the stretcher was replaced when the painting was relined.
