Beautiful work by the former teacher of Piet Mondriaan.
Jan Braet von Uberfeldt was an influential painter of portraits, genre and history pieces and a pupil himself of the well-known genre and portrait painter Adam Kruseman.
Here, he has very sophisticatedly depicted a peasant couple in traditional costume. The rooster next to the man can mean several things. Is the man a 'rooster' with dominate behaviour or does the addition have a different meaning? After all, the rooster is also a symbol of vigilance, joy and reason. For the victory of darkness and thus as a symbol of light.
