Born in Eindhoven in 1896. He was childhood friends with Antoon Coolen, who would later become known as a novelist.
Van den Braken was an admirer of Vincent van Gogh.
In the painting village of Heeze, he was taught by painter Jan Kruysen and came into contact with his son, Anton Kruysen. Many of the painting techniques he used were self-taught.
Van den Braken has lived in many places and has also travelled extensively. Already at a young age, he decided to leave Brabant in order to travel around the world. Lived, worked in Eindhoven, Brussels, Kortenhoef, Paris, London, Rome. Later in life he worked for some time in North America, Canada, Florida and Mexico. Upon his return to the Netherlands, he worked in Amsterdam, The Hague, Eindhoven, and Sterksel.
