Acetates are audio records made as part of the vinyl record production process. They are produced directly from the master tape and are, so to speak, an intermediate stage for the optimal production of the master or press template, the die.
These are the one-off recuts on record, which were given directly to the artist for control purposes or to journalists / radio stations for promotional purposes.
This type of record is one of the rarest and most sought-after collector's items, as they practically only exist once. Even if several acetates of a work were made, each one is unique because of the special manufacturing process.
The value of an acetate increases immeasurably if there are alternative versions or even previously unreleased pieces on the disc.
The best known form of the acetate is probably that
Metal acetates, a metal core (aluminum) with a layer of lacquer made of nitro acetate or cellulose acetate
The smell is typical of both types of acetate ... simply indescribable!
A metal acetate also feels cold and is significantly heavier than a normal plate, even if it is a 180 gr pressing
