Cuban painter (Sagua la Grande, Cuba, 1902 - Paris 1982). After completing his education in Spain, he settled in Paris in 1938. There he joined the surrealists, also attentive to other European avant-garde experiences, especially those by Picasso, with whom he got to know the painter’s friends (Fernand Léger, Paul Éluard, Georges Braque). In 1941 he left Europe for Cuba with André Breton, who wanted to go to New York.
Returning several times to the Antilles, after 1964 he settled in Albisola, dividing his time between Italy and Paris.
Motifs of oceanic and African art, totem images of zoomorphic and phytomorphic elements fill his intense and original compositions, synthesis of primitive art and European avant-garde (The Jungle, 1942-43, New York, Museum of modern art). He also illustrated A. Breton’s poem Fata Morgana.
