Paul B. Du Chaillu
Explorations & Adventures In Equatorial Africa. With Accounts of the Manners and Customs of the People, and of the Chace of the Gorilla, Crocodile, Leopard, Elephant, Hippopotamus, and Other Animals.

Rare original publisher's brown illustrated cloth covers. Gilt illustration and gilt titles along spine.

With the original double-spread frontispiece of a gorilla at the front and a folding map of Equatorial Africa at the rear.

Du Chaillu made several significant discoveries during his first expedition to equatorial Africa in 1856-59. He explored the St. Nazareth, Mexias and Fernando Vaz and determined that they were outlets of the Ogabai River. He provided important information on the Fan tribe of cannibals and species of birds and animals, particularly the gorilla. Du Chaillu asserted that he was "the first white man who has systematically hunted this beast, and who has at all penetrated to its haunts."

Condition: Fine. Covers in rather bad condition with the spine beginning to de-attach from the back cover (see photos). Original frontispiece of a gorilla well-preserved (very rare). Ex-libris on the back of the front board. Edges with some foxing, pages mostly nice and clean. B/w plates in very good condition throughout. Map at the rear complete but damaged (see photos). Overall a complete and solid copy.
