De Tigny, Buffon, de Sève, Baraband - Histoire naturelle des insectes, composée d'après Réaumur Geoffroy, Degeer, Roesel, Linnée, Fabricus - 1802
Biologie, Illustriert, Kunst, Naturgeschichte - Anzahl: 10 - Buch

First edition of this rare book on insects by the naturalist
De Tigny, continuing Buffon’s work.

The book is esteemed for the beauty of its illustrations made up of 109 plates (of 110, missing 1pl “Prione Cervicorne” in volume 7), 105 of which were finely illuminated at the time and 4 in black and white: butterflies, bees, beetles, orthoptera, etc. drawn from nature by De Seve, Baraband and Meunier.

Fresh and clean copy, plates in very good condition. About 10 plates have some light foxing, the rest are in perfect condition. Complete with tissue. The missing plate seems to have never been included in this copy.

Significant restorations on the spine of volumes 12, 2 and 10; discreet in volume 3. The set is still decorative. Sturdy bindings.

“In this book, De Tigny has gathered all of the observations of
some importance, scattered amongst the writings of the most famous entomologists, on the forms, the
metamorphoses, the habits and mores of insects. He also benefited from their work
to divide and classify in a clear and simple way the animals too small to be
considered other than in separate groups. To this abundant and valuable collection De Tigny
added the results of his long research and the fruit of his own observations. Death
having taken him before he had put the finishing touches on his work, A Brongniart was
put in charge of the introduction and the orders that remained to be done.” (see Foreword).
