Very special original illustration in mixed media (watercolour + gouache) by the world-famous Italian illustrator Fortunino Matania.
This work was used for a postcard, produced by Martin's Bank limited, the bank that also served as a background in this scene.
Note the beautiful details. A museum piece!
!!! As a special extra, this lot includes an original letter from Buckingham Palace, authorising the realisation of the bank's greeting card, dated 5 August 1953.
This letter is attached to the back of the board.
Hand-signed by Matania.
The cardboard on which the work was attached has a size of 37.9 x 30 cm.
The work itself has been removed from the cardboard due to the fact that this cardboard is woody and there was a risk that acid spots would occur.
The painting is made on a sheet of paper of 29.5 x 23 cm. The image itself has a size of 24.5 x 19 cm.
Both the painting and the sheet of paper are in perfect condition.
Matania was an Italian artist famous for his countless depictions from classical antiquity, war scenes and illustrations of the British royal family.
Much of his work was lost in World War II when his studio was bombed.
A master of the realistic style!
His work was published in Illustrazione Italiana (1895-1902), The Graphic (1901-1904), the Sphere (1904-1963) and Brittania and Eve.
Will be packaged with care and shipped with additional insurance.
