Binding with the coat of arms of Henriette-Eugénie de Béthisy Mézières, Princess of Ligne (1711-1788). Period tan marbled calfskin binding, adorned smooth spine, repeated gilded fleurons within the compartments, red mosaicked leather title label. First edition of this poem in 9 songs imitating the Bible, illustrated with a charming vignette engraved on the title, by Moreau (Cohen, 153).

Sturdy volume, wear from use: small fragments missing on the headcap and split joints. Interior in good condition in terms of freshness, the leaves are very slightly yellowed, some rare foxing. Decent condition.

Joseph by Paul-Jérémie Bitaubé is inspired by the story of the Hebrew Patriarch, son of Jacob and Rachel, born in Haran (Mesopotamia) in 1745 B.C., died in 1635. Published in 1767, the work was highly successful and was translated into Spanish, English, German. There were many editions in French of this long poem in nine songs and in prose.
