Attractive Volume, With Portrait Memoir of the Author and 64 coloured plates
A charming field guide to the plants of England which was often referred to as 'the bible of the amateur botanist'. Written by Charles Alexander Johns (1811-1874), an English botanist and priest. This work ran more than fifty editions, such was its popularity. It describes the plants of Britain, with their common and Latin names and their uses. The author also published a number of works on botany and natural history, such as 'Forest Trees of Britain', 'Sea Weeds' and 'The Cottage Flower Garden'.

Published by Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, London, 1911. Publishers’ original blue cloth boards with gilt title and gilt wild floral vignette on upper board. Spine lettered in gilt. Top page edges gilt.

A well preserved copy. Solid and Firm boards. Light wear to boards’ corners, with minor rubbing to head and foot of spine. Internally; the book is in very good condition; A name on first front free page. Inner hinges are very good, and pages are tightly held at the gutter. Text is fresh, and pages are clean. All plates are present and bright (Please see pictures).
