Botanik, Illustriert, Wissenschaft (allgemein) - Anzahl: 1 - tipped in plate- Illustration

Original half leather and purple pebble paper binding, spine with golden title and friezes. Elegant calligraphic frontispiece, with a central vignette drawn in light blue pen and title enclosed within a polychrome romantic frame with golden reliefs: another handwritten sheet, polychrome and gold, with medallion painted in light blue and lovely small painting depicting a bunch of flowers placed inside a shell; 44 orchids mentioned in the work are listed in red paint; 8 unnumbered pages including the cover and half-cover page; 48 beautiful lithographs magnificently painted with watercolours from the time with some rubber reliefs, depicting the most beautiful orchids from all tropical regions of the world; for each plate there is an explanatory page of text. First edition of this important work with a high-quality iconographic apparatus. Linden, orchid hunter par excellence, was the first to transplant the flowers of his passion into mountainous regions, achieving remarkable and innovative results thanks to the climate of those regions. After ten years in the Western Hemisphere, Linden returned to Brussels in 1845 where, with his son Lucien, he founded Horticulture Internationale, the first commercial competitor of his British antagonist Sander. Linden imported more than 1,100 species of orchids into Belgium. The book is dedicated to M. Pescatore of St. Cloud, in France, one of the first orchid hobbyists in the continent, and whose collection was curated by Linden himself. The publication in question, the result of a collaboration between Linden, G. Lüddemann, J.E. Planchon and M.G. Reichenbach, was abandoned after Pescatore’s death. Therefore, the volume, although indicated as volume I, remained the only one published. The lithographs were made by F. Detollenaere, from Maubert’s drawings (The Orchid osservati, no. 16). Copy preserved in excellent condition, further enhanced by the first two sheets, handwritten and painted.

No. 103.
