Verschlüsselung, Kalligraphie und gedruckte Zeichen - Anzahl: 1 - tipped in plate- Illustration

Rare edition of Palatino’s masterpiece, which is a real manual of calligraphy and typography. The styles of the letters are divided by countries and geographical areas, as well as a further division by use and profession. This is the new edition of Blado, corrected and expanded by the author "with 12 beautiful plates", the editio princeps was printed for the first time in 1540. Also noteworthy is the part dedicated to the writing style of the left hand and the suggestions for writing a cipher text.

On the title page portrait of the author within an oval, each sheet framed by a double border, on the back of the penultimate sheet there is a large full-page printer’s brand, numerous historiated initials.

Uncommon (registered in only 3 Italian Libraries: Vatican, Nazionale di Roma and Angelica). Marzoli 2, p. 37 notes. Bonacini 1335. Sander, II, 5392. Adams P-74 (ediz. 1547). BMC 485. Brunet IV, 314.

Superb manual of calligraphy intended for a large audience of scholars. Structured in a rational way, Palatino's manual describes chancery, commercial (Milanese, Roman, Venetian, Florentine, Genoese ...), vernacular and ciphered writings, drawing inspiration from the works of Vicentino and Tagliente. Important volume also notable for the accurate layout and graphic rendering: each sheet is dated, signed and framed by fillets or cartouches, all in woodcut.

Eighteenth-century full parchment binding, handwritten title on the spine, blue coloured edges; Pp. (2b) + (126) + (2b); title page and some sheets have been reinforced and present some browning. Bookplate JJ. S. Bibliophile on the first endpaper, woodcut portrait of the author on the title page, initials in woodcut, text framed in double fillets and in italics, various woodcut samples of calligraphy on full and double pages, typographic mark on the back of the sheet Hvii.

Giovanni Battista Palatino (Rossano, 1515 - Naples, 1575) was an Italian writer, calligrapher and copyist; a type of font widely used in computer science was called Palatino Linotype in his honour.

The Palatino font was created by Hermann Zapf in the late 1950s. He named it in honour of Giambattista Palatino, writing master of the time of Leonardo da Vinci. Zapf optimized Palatino's design by increasing its readability and creating an Old Face font that demonstrates how classic shapes can still be used to create new typefaces.

Master of calligraphy, Giambattista Palatino was the author of the most famous and successful treatise on writing and calligraphic models of the Renaissance, titled “Libro nuovo d'imparare a scrivere”, published in Rome in 1540 for Baldassare by Francesco Cartolari and undoubtedly recognized as one of the most interesting documents in the culture of communication of the modern age
