Green morocco binding with unidentified coat of arms struck in gold on the centre of both boards.
Contains a lovely little edition of the works of Claudian printed in 1638 in Amsterdam in small print by Ioannem Ianssonium (1558-1664). Title in an architectural frame with a sphere. Opens with the life of Claudian by Pietro Crinito.
Claudian (in Latin Claudius Claudianus approx. 370- approx. 404) was the last great poet of the classical tradition.
His work is of interest as a historical source. His fecundity for invention and his scathing invective are also remarkable.
Contains among other things the political poems that take a stand for the re-establishment of an empire governed according to the culturally pagan tradition, in the line of the emperors-citizens. It notably includes: the mythological epic “Raptus Proserpinae” (The Rape of Proseserpine), The war against the Getes (De bello getico), in praise of Stilicon (Lavs Stilichonis, L. I, II and III). The military victory against the Getes (De bello getico) etc
